The summer transfer window has shut down this week and clubs will now have to wait till winter to make their next moves. However, there are still free agents in the market, which the clubs can target to bolster their squad.
Free agents are the players, who do not have contracts with any club. This summer, we saw the likes of Sergio Ramos, Lionel Messi, and Memphis Depay move to different clubs as free agents.
However, there are some players who are still without a club, who can be bargain picks for some of the sides. These are five of the free agents Premier League clubs could target this season.
TOP FREE AGENTS:
Serge Aurier terminated his contract with Tottenham Hotspur after the relationship between them turned sour. The right-back, who has played for PSG, made 110 appearances for Spurs. He is an excellent attacking threat but was always questioned for his defensive contribution. Currently, he is linked with a controversial move to Arsenal, while Roma are also interested.
The 34-year-old goalkeeper made his move to Manchester United in 2015. However, he was always the second choice behind David De Gea and found very few minutes on the ground. A decent goalkeeper, Romero made his name during the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where he was a pivotal part of Argentina’s squad. Premier League sides like Leeds or newcomers Brentford could take a punt on the player to provide experience between the sticks.
At just 26, Bentaleb is an excellent choice because of his age. The Algerian is familiar with Premier League, as he came through the youth system of Tottenham Hotspurs. He also made appearances with Newcastle United in one seas but spent most of his time with German side Schalke. Disciplinary issues have been a problem for Bentaleb, but if clubs like Burnley or Southampton can help him with that, the player can be a good asset.
Once considered as the best talent to come from England, the current situation of Wilshere is very sad. The former Arsenal midfielder had a lot of expectations of him, but could never live up to that standard. Injuries also didn’t help him as he couldn’t get regular minutes with his clubs. While it is a big risk, clubs from lower down the table could bring in the 29-year-old for free.
Sturridge was a very effective striker, especially during the Brendon Rodgers era in Liverpool. However, the player was banned for betting, which meant that his former club Trabzonspor terminates the contract. The ban is set to be over and at 32, Sturridge still has plenty to offer. Sides that are looking to add more strength up front could get the two times champions league winner for free.
There are other players in the market who the clubs in Premier League can target. This includes the likes of David Luiz, Franck Ribery, and Eliaquim Mangala. Whether the clubs are willing to take the risk in something to be seen.
