AC Milan has suffered a blow with an injury to Mike Maignan

AC Milan currently sits at the 2nd spot in the league table behind Napoli with 26 points. The Rossoneri want to defend their Scudetto and have started the season quite well. However, the defending champions have struck a roadblock with the injury to the first-choice goalkeeper, Mike Maignan.

The French goalkeeper has been ruled out of action for a couple of months at least. The shot-stopper is expected to return in the new year. The Italian champions are working with Ciprian Tatarusanu for the time being as he is the second-choice goalkeeper. However, there is a substantial difference in the quality of Tatarusanu and Maignan. The club faltered in the transfer market when they failed to sign an able replacement for the goalkeeping position.

The transfer window is not open and will only be open in January. This makes it difficult for the club to find a replacement at this stage of the season. The games are also coming thick and fast as the league season will be at a halt due to the FIFA World Cup in November-December. The Rossoneri have no option other than relying on Ciprian Tatarusanu till the January transfer window or the return of Mike Maignan.

Who can AC Milan get as a backup to Maignan in January?

Reports from Italy have mentioned that the club is not looking to bring in any replacement as they expect Mike Maignan to return in the new year. However, if AC Milan were to look for another goalkeeper who will be the ideal candidate? Till a few weeks back, Kepa Arrizabalaga could have been an excellent option as he wanted more game time and Chelsea had no plans to offer him that.

However, the Spaniard has been given renewed opportunities due to the injury to Edouard Mendy. The record signing has performed exceedingly well in the goal and has kept successive clean sheets for the club. The Spanish goalkeeper has been in fine form and has only conceded once in the last six games.

A real option for the defending Italian champions can be Simon Mignolet from Club Brugge. The Belgian has been in fine form this season and has helped his team qualify for the Knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League for the very first time. The Belgian shot-stopper has not conceded even once in the European competition and put in splendid performances. Club Brugge will not be a difficult team to convince for the sale of the goalkeeper and he can be a really qualitative backup for Mike Maignan!!
