Aguero hails Lionel Messi as ‘better goalscorer’; slams Cristiano Ronaldo’s free-kick saying ‘pure luck’

Sergio Aguero, a former Manchester City striker, has opened up on the Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo debate, taking an attack at the Portuguese superstar.

Sergio Aguero, a Manchester City Legend, believes Lionel Messi is a better goal scorer than Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi recently overtook Ronaldo’s record for most goals in European football, netting his 702nd in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Nice in Ligue 1. As a result, the age-old debate over who is the better player was reignited. Consequently Aguero called out Cristiano Ronaldo’s free-kick ability during a Twitch live.

Messi opened the score for Paris Saint-Germain against Nice in the first half before setting up Sergio Ramos for his side’s second at the Allianz Riviera on Saturday. The 35-year-old Argentine attacker has now scored 702 goals in Europe. One more than Al Nassr star Ronaldo in 105 fewer games. Messi’s future at PSG is uncertain since his contract expires in the summer. Barcelona great has drawn interest from Saudi Arabia and his former club.
Aguero backed his Argentine counterpart when seeing a compilation of Ronaldo and Messi’s best goals, characterising Ronaldo’s free-kick as “all free-kick goals were pure luck.” “Look where he scores the goal from,” Aguero stated, according to  Mediotiempo.

“Come on. All free-kick goals and pure luck. Messi’s are all at the angle, stupid. But what does [Ronaldo] do? Goalkeeper’s fault. I think Raul has better goals, [Karim] Benzema I think he has better ones.”

Aguero also claimed that Ronaldo “cannot match Messi” and that his 40-yard shot against Porto in 2009, which won the FIFA Puskas Award that year, was due to “a goalkeeper error.” “How many free-kick goals were shown?” he added. “Ronaldo had 15 free kicks among his top 20 goals. In 15 of Messi’s top 20 goals, he dribbled past five players.”

Of course, the forward is great friends with Messi from their days as colleagues in Argentina’s youth setup, and Messi is also the godfather of Aguero’s kid Benjamin. Due to a heart condition, Aguero was obliged to retire in 2021, while Messi has been linked with a return to Barcelona this summer, with his PSG contract set to expire at the end of the season.
