Andres Iniesta applauds Messi as Argentina oust Brazil

Argentina’s 28-year long wait for an international trophy is finally over, and Lionel Messi has finally won a major tournament with his country thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win over Brazil at the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro to win the 2021 Copa América.

The Argentines had an excellent first half, and went ahead thanks to Angel Di Maria’s lob following a magnificent long ball from Rodrigo De Paul.

Argentina have followed the exact same strategy for the entire tournament – score early and defend their lead with tough, physical defense and a whole lot of heart. That is what they did when Brazil threw everything forward to start the second half.

Argentina end their 28-year long trophy drought

Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta heaped praise on former teammate Messi. He commended on the way the Little Magician played throughout the tournament. Iniesta says that winning the trophy has lifted the weight off Messi.

“I think for him, on a personal level, it’s a weight off his shoulders. He has finally won something with his national team after being close so many times. He was impeccable at the Copa America, beyond the goals and the assists. For me, Messi is still the No.1.”– Andres Iniesta.

While the pain of not winning a major trophy has haunted Argentina for the last 28 years, Messi has been part of that ordeal for the past 16 years. Argentina and Messi have lost their share of finals together. They against Germany (2014 World Cup Final) after a brilliant goal by Mario Gotze. They lost losing out on penalties to Chile (2015, 2016 Copa America Final). The curse has been broken.
