Ange Postecoglou on recent performances and results

Ange Postecoglou must have been pleased after Tottenham won 3-0 against Manchester United. Going through a poor run of games, the Australian manager talked to the press about what was different in this game compared to the last few against Leicester, Newcastle, and Arsenal amongst other things. Postecoglou has secured an unprecedented 7 points from 3 games against the Red Devils, surpassing all previous Spurs managers. Let’s look at what Ange Postecoglou had to say after the contest and what this result means for him and his team.

Ange Postecoglou at Spurs

The Aussie was full of praise for his players. Ange Postecoglou joined the club last season and had an unbelievable start. His team won eight games and drew twice after the first ten matches of the season. With twenty-six points out of a possible 30, it looked like Spurs would compete for the league in the first season under a new coach. In the next few weeks, many injuries followed, and spurs lost the initial momentum. In the next twenty-eight games, they won a meager forty points and finished the season at fifth position in the league.

His team is back this season and after two wins from five matches, this was also looking like a typical Spurs season. Even though their offensive numbers have been great, they never look solid at the back. The good part is that Spurs have a way of playing football. Unlike Manchester United who look all over the place at times, Spurs have a system which they follow. The kind of football that they play is exciting and it instills confidence in the fans. Any team that thrives in chaotic conditions generally needs a season or two to find the balance between attack and defense. Ange is nowhere near nailed as the Spurs manager for a long time but that does not mean that he along with his players can become serious challengers once they figure out how to keep clean sheets.

The Press Conference

Postecoglou talked about how his team has played well in matches where the result hasn’t gone their way. The Spurs boss said the team’s mentality after missing opportunities in the games against Leicester, Newcastle, and Arsenal wasn’t right. He talked about how they killed the game this time but failed to do so in the last few fixtures. The lads were aggressive overall, with or without the ball. He also talked about how calm the players were in the game and did not think about missed chances. He thinks that his team has shown calmness and composure in the last three games and did not get frustrated because of missed chances. It’s never about the last play, its always about the next is what he believes in and so do I.

He said good things about Maddisson, and Johnson but seemed really impressed by Solanke and Van De Ven. He said that Solanke fits in well with the rest of the squad and has led the frontline in a manner that he likes.

Big Ange and his team should be proud of this performance, not because they have beaten a dreadful Manchester United side but because they did it so convincingly. ETH’s team could only generate 0.97 expected goals against Spurs whereas the Londoners generated a whooping 4.67 expected goals. As soon as the game began, the difference in quality between the two teams was clear. The best takeaway for Ange Postecoglou and his boys is that they might look bad on some days, but they are not on Erik Ten Hag and Manchester United’s level of incompetence.
