Antony Is At His Best At Betis, Gives Man United Hope

Following an excellent loan from Real Betis, Manchester United are expected to transfer Antony permanently in June.

Antony Finds His Spark in Spain

Antony’s start to the season at Manchester United was a major failure. The Brazilian winger was not making a single start in the team’s first 22 Premier League games. That forced United to make a tough call in January. They sent him out on loan to get his form back.

Real Betis offered him a lifeline just before the window slammed shut. He is having a great time in Spain. In just 21 games for the Spanish side, he’s bagged eight goals and set up five more. That is just four short of the total he managed across 96 appearances in red.

He scored a brilliant free-kick against Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League. He helped Betis punch their ticket to the final. With a goal and an assist in that game alone, he reminded everyone why he once carried a hefty price tag.

United’s Price Problem and the £32.5m Catch

Antony’s great loan spell in Spain has done exactly what the Red Devils hoped for. They wanted to rebuilt his reputation and created a transfer market for him.

There is, however, one big catch. The winger, who was signed for £86.3m in 2022, has to be sold for at least £32.5m this summer. That is if United want to lessen the financial loss in accordance with the Profit and Sustainability Rules.

While Betis would love to keep him longer, their CEO admitted that United have full control over what happens next. Club’s interest is growing and Antony is showing his flair again. So, a full-season loan with a purchase option could be the best compromise.

Either way, United know they won’t get anywhere near what they paid. But, they’ll hope to turn a poor investment into a manageable loss. At the very least, Antony has rebuilt his confidence. And that alone might be worth something.
