Chelsea and Arsenal both wanted to sign a striker this summer. They were both linked with multiple players and had common interest in few of them. One of them was Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres.
Gyokeres has been on fire since last season. He scored 43 goals and picked 14 assists in 50 games for Sporting last season. Gyokeres has once again started this season in similar manner.
He has found the back of the net 11 times and bagged 3 assists in just 9 matches this season. Gyokeres is only 26 years old and is set to become a lethal striker if he carries on like this.
Sporting CP are completely aware of the situation and hence are unwilling to let him leave. They have made it clear that the only way to lure Gyokeres away is by triggering his £85 million release clause.
Where are Chelsea and Arsenal in the race for Viktor Gyokeres
Gyokeres was looked upon by Chelsea this summer but The Blues never made a move for him. They went all out for Victor Osimhen instead but failed to land him. Chelsea are once again linked with Osimhen and then want to sign him in January.
Osimhen has a break clause in his current loan contract with Galatasaray. Hence, as of now Osimhen is still the top priority of The Blues and there are no talks regarding Gyokeres.
On the other hand, Gunners are in desperate need of a striker but are unwilling to pay £85 million. Sporting have no intention to lower their price despite Gyokeres saying himself that the price is too high.
It is really smart business from Sporting as they will not have any shortage of offers from the top clubs in the upcoming transfer windows. They also have to pay 10% of the profit to Coventry due to sell-on clause. Coventry have already earned around £20 million from Gyokeres’ sale as per The Mirror.
