The Gunners are now at the upper half of the newly formatted UEFA Champions League table. After the match week 5 they are now standing at the 7th place of the table with 10 points on their name. If things stand like this then Arsenal will qualify for the R-16 phase directly.
Arsenal started their European campaign on a mix note this season. After a disappointing draw against Atalanta away from home in the match week 1, they did make a good comeback. Arsenal won the next two games against PSG and Shakhtar respectively. However, the loss against Inter at San Siro created the doubts in the mind of the Gooners.
The fans started to criticize the tactics of Mikel Arteta. So, the next game against Sporting CP was a must win game for the team to satisfy the fans.
Arsenal dominates Wednesday night in Lisbon
This game wasn’t a easy fixture for the Gunners. As Sporting are in top form this season dominating across all competitions. Their star player Viktor Gyokeres is in the form of his life, scoring goals for fun. He recently scored a hat trick against Man City over their famous 4-1 victory.
Going into the fixture, the threat of Gyokeres was already there amongst the fans. However, Arsenal played their best football that day and completely outclassed the Portuguese side. Gabriel Martinelli gave an early 7 minute lead to start the show.
After not so long Arsenal doubled their lead when Bukayo Saka set up his German colleague Kai Havertz to create a wonderful goal. They made 3 nil right at the end of the first half when Gabriel scored from the corner. Sporting did score one after the break but Arsenal’s process of humiliation didn’t stop as goals from Saka and Trossard respectively to make the score line 5-1 at the end.
A brilliant defensive performance by Saliba and Gabriel kept a monster like Gyokeres quite for the whole game. Apart from that captain Odegaard seemed like he never got injured. Overall it was a wonderful team effort from the Gunners and if they manages to play like this then we could see Arteta lift some silverwares this season.
