Arsenal are busy right now in their pre season games. Their main aim for the next season is to win the Premier League. Mikel Arteta has said that in order to win the title they need to make their squad even more strong. He said that they need to sign some top players. Sporting director Edu has the back of the manager and is busy in the market. Arsenal wanted to sign keeper, left back, midfielder and a striker. These four positions are priority for the club. However they also want to sign a right winger as a backup option for Bukayo Saka. Some positions are now sorted out but the attack is still lacking. Arsenal are now linked with Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres.
Viktor Gyokeres for Sporting CP
Sporting signed Gyokeres last season for £20 million from Coventry City. He was given a five year deal with a release clause of €100 million. Coventry have a 15% sell-on clause which will earn them a good amount on the sale of player. Gyokeres had a good 2022/23 season with Coventry. He played 50 matches. In those, he scored 22 goals along with giving 12 assists. This made Sporting to sign him.
Gyokeres then had the season of his life in 2023/24 with Sporting. He again played 50 matches. But this time he scored 43 goals along with giving 14 assists. As a result, Sporting won the league title. This made Arsenal to look after him as their new striker.
Arsenal linked heavily with Gyokeres
Arsenal’s strikers were very poor in 2023/24 season. Gabriel Jesus only scored 4 goals in the league while as his partner Eddie Nketiah scored only 5 goals. Nketiah has been linked with a move away from Arsenal. Jesus is safe as per now. This does not change the fact that Gunners need a proper striker. A striker who can score on regular basis.
Firstly, Gunners were heavily linked with Benjamin Sesko. However he decided to sign a contract extension with RB Leipzig. Later Arsenal were linked with Victor Osimhen. However his release clause of €130 million is proving very hard for the club to trigger. Gunners were also linked with Gyokeres before, but they were unwilling to pay €100 million for him.
Gunners are now once again going after Gyokeres. They are very close to sell Emile Smith Rowe. In addition, Reiss Nelson, Thomas Partey and Jakub Kiwior also seem to be on their way out along. These sales will lift up Arsenal’s financial side and help them to sign Gyokeres. According to Fichajes, Arsenal have agreed personal terms with Gyokeres.
There is another good news for Gunners as Sporting CP have triggered an agreement with Coventry. This agreement will reduce the 15 percent sell-on clause of Coventry to 10 percent. This could help Gunners as Sporting may agree to a price less than the initially demanded €100 million.
Other Arsenal activities
Arsenal have finally announced the signing of Riccardo Calafiori. Calafiori has signed a five year contract. Gunners paid £39 million to Bologna. Previously, they completed the signing of David Raya on permanent basis. The defence is now all sorted out for Gunners.
Now the club needs to sign a midfielder, striker and maybe a right winger. Along with Gyokeres, Arsenal are still monitoring Victor Osimhen. For the midfield, they are reported very close to sign Mikel Merino. For the right wing position, Gunners are linked with Raphinha. The final month of summer transfer window has already started. It will be interesting to see how Arsenal approach this month and will they be able to sign some top quality superstars.
