Arsenal is reportedly keen on watching a star striker from the Portuguese League play this summer.

The transfer window this summer has been quite frustrating for Arsenal. The team has missed out on some of the key signings this summer. Recently, the talks of the deal for Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi also came to a dead end. It is believed that the Spaniard is reluctant to a move to the Emirates. According to reports, the midfielder was among the top targets for Mikel Arteta this summer.

Regardless, it’s not just the midfielder section where Arsenal is failing to get a deal over the line. The Gunners recently missed out on the possible signing of striker Benjamin Sesko. The RB Leipzig striker is set to extend his contract this summer.

Earlier, the Slovenian had made it clear that he would move to Arsenal if he was to leave Germany. However, now the deal doesn’t appear to be happening anymore.

Arsenal targets Viktor Gyokeres

Getting a new striker on board must be the top priority for Arteta once they get their deal done with Riccardo Calafiori. As per reports, a fee has been agreed between Arsenal and Bologna.

Regardless, One striker the Gunners are believed to be keen on is Primeira Liga’s Viktor Gyokeres. The striker who currently plays for Sporting Lisbon has excelled with the side so far.

According to a report last week, the Portuguese club is considering offers lower than the release clause for the striker. The release clause stands at £85 million as both Arsenal and Liverpool show interest in the Swedish.

A report from a Portuguese outlet Correio De Manha claims that the Gunners are keen on watching the striker in action during the pre season before they make any move.

The reason is believed to be him being injury prone rather than his skills. The newspaper further claimed that the Gunners have been interested in Gyokeres for quite a while now. However, a recent ‘surgical intervention’ in his left knee cooled down the interest a little bit.

Regardless, the outlet claims the injury to not be that serious and the surgery to be only a light one. Gyokeres is said to have already recovered fully and there shouldn’t be any issues moving forward.

He had an outstanding season last term. He scored 29 goals in the Primeira Liga for Sporting and 5 more in the Europa League.

Sporting’s plan for Gyokeres

Reportedly Emirates is highly interested in Gyokeres. However, the same cannot be said for Sporting. The club is believed to be reluctant to sell their star striker.

Gyokeres moved to Lisbon in 2023. He earlier player for EFL Championship side Coventry City. He was praised by Blackburn Rovers defender Dom Hyam, who claimed Gyokeres “has no ceiling”.

On the other hand, Tony Mowbray once called the 29 year old “Championship’s Erling Haaland” after an excellent run at Coventry.

It’s obvious that leaving such a crucial player can’t be easy for the Portuguese Club. Manager Ruben Amorim wouldn’t want one of his key players to leave the side. He also stayed at Sporting despite the interest from Liverpool. He has further made clear that he wants all the stars in his team to stay this summer.

It looks like getting a deal over the line is not possible right now. We will look at how Mikel Arteta works this deal out if he really wants to see the striker on his team. Till then, we can just hope that the Gunners land some new signings this summer.

Let’s see how the rest of summer unfolds for Arsenal. They will be kicking off their pre season soon in the US.
