Arsenal legend highlights Arteta’s big summer mistake

One Arsenal legend has said that Raheem Sterling was not the player Mikel Arteta this summer. He also labelled the move as ‘panic buy’ and made some bold statements.

Gunners were in hunt for a winger this summer. They wanted to buy a winger permanently who can serve as a backup for Saka or compete with Martinelli for a regular spot. But, they were unable to sign any and hence signed Sterling on loan from Chelsea.

This move has not paid so far for Gunners as Sterling has not been able to make any difference. It is also reported that, Arsenal will not sign the 29 year old permanently next year. Now, Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit has had his say about this summer move.

Petit labels Raheem Sterling as ‘Panic Buy’ by Mikel Arteta

Petit made some bold statements while speaking about Raheem Sterling joining Gunners. He also revealed who was Arteta’s top priority after having his say about Sterling’s situation right now.

“Raheem Sterling was panic buy. For me Mikel Arteta knows that he’s missing players, numbers in his squad, quality players in terms of rotation. He knows that, so at the end of transfer market during the summer, he knew that he had no choice just to get Sterling because he didn’t want to put the big money on the table for other players” – Petit speaking to Instant Casino as quoted by The Metro.

So far this season, Sterling is really struggling to improve. Hence it can be said that Petit is correct with his comments. Sterling still has a lot of time to leave his mark in North London but at the moment is far away from earning permanent move.

Later, Petit revealed who was Arteta’s top priority in terms of winger. He said that the Arsenal boss wanted to sign Nico Williams but added that he will never be able to sign him. Petit claimed that Williams will stay in Spain and will join Barcelona in future.
