Robert Pires has picked 3 current stars over his former Arsenal teammates from the 2003-04 season which made Gunners the only team to win the Premier League without any defeat. They were handed ‘The Invincibles’ title after that season.
Pires was asked to choose between current Arsenal stars and the one in the Invincibles team. He was asked to pick the best combined starting 11 between those two squads by SPORTbible.
Pires picked 8 of his former teammates over the current players. It was expected as the 2003/04 Gunners squad was something else. Only 3 stars made it in the lineup from Pires but most people didn’t agree with that too.
Robert Pires picks 3 current Arsenal stars over The Invincibles
Pires picked his former teammates Lehman, Lauren, Campbell, Cole, Vieira, Gilberto Silva, Henry and Bergkamp. In addition, he picked the legendary Arsene Wenger over Mikel Arteta too.
Pires picked William Saliba over Kolo Toure. He paired Campbell with Saliba which would have been a deadly defensive duo. Later, he picked Martinelli over himself and many Arsenal fans didn’t agree with this pick. Pires was asked whether he is staying humble with this pick to which he replied with ‘yes’.
Lastly, Pires picked Bukayo Saka over Freddie Ljungberg. This question made him think very much but at last he opted to go over Saka. It is really a tough question as both Saka and Ljungberg have very close stats when compared.
Overall as per Pires, 3 current stars made it over the Invincibles players. He picked both Saka and Martinelli over him. Pires scored 84 goals for Gunners in 284 matches. Martinelli has 48 goals in 208 games for Gunners so far. On the other hand, Saka has 67 in 250 games. Pires still has upper hand over both current stars despite picking them over himself.
