Arsenal target Nick Cushing for the women’s team manager role

The Gunners have bade farewell to their women’s team head coach Jonas Eidevall last week. In fact, Jonas himself resigned from the position after an upsetting start to the new season. And in his absence assistant head coach Renee Slegers has took charge of the team as an interim manager.

It is believed that, Jonas resigned from his role at the right time. As the Gunners were this close to fire the Swede, which would have been quite humiliating. The Arsenal women’s team didn’t start the season in a good pace under Jonas. As they only won 2 of their first 7 games across all competitions under him. As per the reports of BBC, this was their worst start of the season in the last 5 years.

After suffering a humiliating 5-2 defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League earlier this month, Jonas’s job already was on the line. But a 2-1 defeat in the London derby, against Chelsea, at home almost did confirm the sack of Jonas. But before any of that could take place, the 41-year-old himself stepped away.

And now, the Gunners will be monitoring several candidates for that head coach role. And a former Super League manager is one of the top contender for that role.

Gunners target Nick Cushing

Arsenal are considering to bring in former Man City women’s team head coach Nick Cushing to fill up the role. Nick managed the East Manchester club for 7 seasons during his stay at England. Under his management City even won the Women’s Super League title back in 2016.

But in 2020 he left the UK and moved to the United States to work in men’s football. There he joined the New York City FC as an assistant manager. But it took Nick only 2 years to take over the head coach role of the club. However he hasn’t been that much effective since taking over the charge in 2022.

In Nick’s first season as the head coach, NYCFC finished at the 3rd place in the MLS with 55 points on their name. However, last season wasn’t a memorable time for the 39-year-old. As NYCFC finished at the 11th spot, which was the worst season in the club’s history since it was founded in 2013. And this season also hasn’t been impressing so far under the Englishman as NYCFC is at the 6th spot with just 50 points on their name in 34 matches in the league, which includes 12 losses.

However, the Gunners still likes the way how Nick Cushing plays aggressive football and likes to test the opposition defense. Though the Gunners will be monitoring the situation with him but it is also less likely for Nick to leave the men’s football team manager role that easily. As of now his only focus will be on the best-of-three MLS series play-offs against Cincinnati from 29th October to 10th November.

Arsenal’s demand from the new manager

While Arsenal director Edu Gaspar will be looking for the replacement of Jonas he will want only one thing from the candidate during recruitment. And that is a clear and pinpoint system to win the silverware. During his stay at the club, Jonas Eidevall have built a great structure inside the club. But he failed to use the resources.

And now the new manager will have to put the pieces together to find a way towards glory. In the recent transfer windows the Gunners spent a loads of money and renewed contacts with the biggest of stars. But despite of a squad full of talent and potential they failed to win the WSL.

But instead of hiring a new manager like Nick Cushing the Gunners can give a chance to the former assistant manager Reene Slegers since the winter break. As she was involved in the club’s structure, she can operate well with the players. During her stay as an interim manager Slegers will definitely love to convince the club what she is capable of. She has already won all the two games as the head coach so far and will be looking forward to do so.
