Arsenal to take U-turn to sign Viktor Gyokeres

Arsenal have started the 2024/25 season with two wins in two matches. The defeated Wolves and Aston Villa in the opening two fixtures of Premier League. Gunners are looking confident on the field under Mikel Arteta. They look forward to winning the league title this term and put an end to their long wait. On the other hand, the board is still busy in the transfer market. There are only a few days left before the window closes. Gunners have signed their third player this summer. However, he is not yet announced officially. It was reported that the North London club will not sign striker this summer. However, Arsenal may now be seen going once again after Viktor Gyokeres. Sporting CP have a fear of losing their superstar in the final days of window. Besides Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris-Saint Germain are also linked with Gyokeres.

Arsenal’s striker situation

Arsenal had a very good last season defensively. They were the best team in defence conceding only 29 goals in the league. It was less than anyone else. However, they scored five less goals than Manchester City. This is surely one of the reason they fell short to lift the Premier League trophy by only two points. The main source of this problem was the inconsistency of strikers in scoring goals. Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah were the main strikers for the club. However, they were only able to score 9 goals when combined. This forced Arteta to use Havertz as striker. Havertz did not disappoint as he was able to find the back of the net 13 times in the league. In addition, he provided 7 assists too.

Arsenal wanted to sign a striker this summer transfer window and hence were linked with big names like Victor Osimhen, Viktor Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko and many more. However, they were unable to reach the deal with any of them. In addition, the board was busy in signing Calafiori and Mikel Merino. Recently, it was revealed by Football Insider that Arsenal will not sign a striker this summer.

Mikel Arteta trusts his attacking players and is expected to use Havertz as his main striker. Jesus is staying at the club as for now and is expected to be a backup striker. In addition, Gunners don’t like to operate in rush and hence may have dropped the idea. Eddie Nketiah is still linked with a move away from The Emirates. However, recent news suggest that Gunners may make their way back into the race for Viktor Gyokeres.

Arsenal to re-enter the race for Viktor Gyokeres

Viktor Gyokeres has started this season from where he left last season. In 2023/24 season he scored 43 goals and provided 14 assists in 50 matches across all competitions. However, he needed to undergo surgery on his left knee during the pre-season. This raised some doubts about his fitness and how the injury will affect his performances. However, Gyokeres has been unstoppable once again this season. He has scored 6 goals and provided 3 assists in just 4 appearances. This has once again made Gyokeres a hot topic in the transfer window.

Sporting CP have a fear that the €100 million release clause mentioned in their striker’s contract can be triggered this summer. They have no intention to let Gyokeres leave. However, they will have no choice once a top club comes knocking their door with a suitable price. Ruben Amorim who is the manager of Sporting said that the release clause gives them security. Gyokeres is comfortable staying with Sporting this season but gave a mixed review on the situation. He said anything can happen until the market closes.

Arsenal can go after Viktor Gyokeres as they will not like their target go to another club. They may speed up the process and make their way back in the race. In addition, they have the financial capacity which makes their position strong. Gyokeres can have positive impact on the Gunners side. However, the deal will have negative affect on Sporting as they will have to monitor plenty of options as his potential replacement. The transfer window will close on 30th August in United Kingdom whereas on 2nd September in Portugal.
