Arsenal transfers: David Ornstein shares light on Spaniard signing

Gunner Lucas Perez

Arsenal are keen to sign Spanish midfielder this summer. However, they are joined by La Liga giants in the race. David Ornstein has now shared light on the current situation.

The star in question here is Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad. The 26 year old was heavily linked with a move to Premier League last summer. He was being chased by Arsenal and Liverpool who both failed to convince the player.

Zubimendi wanted to stay in Spain last summer but his stance has now changed. He is open to move away from Sociedad with Gunners still interested. Liverpool also hold interest but they might not make a move considering Ryan Gravenberch’s recent success.

Arsenal need new midfielder urgently as both Thomas Partey and Jorginho are set to leave the club. This will need them to find a holding midfielder who can play as central midfielder when required. Martin Zubimendi fits perfectly in this criteria.

However, there are reports that Real Madrid are also willing to sign Zubimendi. Los Blancos are eyeing replacement for Luka Modric who may depart this summer. In addition, they are said to part ways with Aurelien Tchouameni.

David Ornstein hands Arsenal boost in pursuit for Zubimendi

Despite the interest from Madrid, Ornstein has handed lead to Gunners. He opted to clarify about the situation in the question and answer session for the Athletic. Firstly, he said that he is not aware of any interest from Real Madrid.

“Arsenal are expecting Zubimendi to join them from Real Sociedad this summer. I don’t know if that means it is completely done but for some time now they have been working on the basis that he’ll be coming in” – Ornstein’s answer as quoted by GiveMeSport.

There are reports that Zubimendi has agreed personal terms with Gunners. This suggests that the North London club is very close to land the Spaniard. The transfer activity will speed-up once Andrea Berta takes over as new sporting director.
