Refree’s decision in the Arsenal vs Inter game has been labelled ‘harsh’ by football greats. The decision directly costed Gunners who despite dominating the game, had to leave Italy without a point.
Gunners dominated the full match against Inter at San Siro. But they were unable to find the back of the net. They faced their first defeat of UCL this season and it was with very narrow (1-0) margin.
Inter were awarded penalty in the added time if first half. It was because the ball hit Mikel Merino’s hands. VAR had a look but they stuck with on-field decision. Hakan Calhanoglu made no mistake in scoring the only goal of the match.
Inter defended very well in the second half and were able to finish the game with all three points. But, now the refree’s decision to award a penalty has been questioned by many of the football greats.
Arsenal vs Inter: Refree’s decision labelled ‘harsh’
While speaking to TNT Sports, former Arsenal player Martin Keown refused to believe that it was awarded as a penalty. He called it really harsh decision and was backed by others.
“It was controversial. It’s fine margins. I don’t believe that was a penalty. I feel this is really harsh. Where are you supposed to put your arm in that position? Who’s making those rules? Have they played the game?” – Keown speaking about penalty incident.
Former Rangers player Ally McCoist also had very similar views. He called these decision extremely hard and said that the law has to change. He urged that word deliberate has to come into play. Lastly, he said that this was not deliberate and it was Nuances.
Lastly former Man United player Rio Ferdinand had his say where he too said that the decision was harsh. Listening to all these football greats and viewing the incident we can agree that Merino had almost no time from preventing the ball hit his hand. But as of now, Inter have claimed all three points and Gunners have face their first european defeat this season.
