Arsenal with ‘most concrete interest’ for Riccardo Calafiori

Arsenal is interested in signing Italian star defender Riccardo Calafiori this summer to strengthen their title hopes.

After coming agonizingly close to winning the 2023/24 Premier League title, Arsenal lost out to Manchester City by just 2 points. The Gunners will be eying to turn around their fortunes and end their two-decade-long drought for the trophy.

Now, Arsenal are eyeing Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori to add to the side. The 22-year-old is a growing sensation in European Football.

Regardless of how much the Serie A club would want to keep the defender, the possibility of Calafiori moving out this summer has increased. Citing this Bologna technical director Giovanni Sartori while speaking to Sky Sports Italy clearly stated that they could not afford Riccardo Calafiori going to their rivals Juventus. This means that the Italian might be leaving the country to play in another league.

In an interview last week, Fabrizio Romano called Calafiori ‘one of the best left-foot defenders available in the market’. Further, the Italian stated Arsenal has already made a query regarding his availability this summer.

Ahead of the start of the 2024/25 season, Mikel Arteta will be looking to boost his defensive options. His side was already the best defensive lineup in the league and the addition of Calafiori will only make it better.

Gunners eyeing Italian star

Riccardo Calafiori has made huge impressions with Bologna since his move from Basel last summer. The 22-year-old received his first call for a major international tournament thanks to his performance in the Italian league.

Calafiori helped his club reach fifth in Serie A and also qualify for the Champions League. Under the leadership of Thiago Motta, he and many other players got their breakthrough season at Bologna. These include Joshua Zirkzee who is on the target for Manchester United and the Swiss star Dan Ndoye.

Calafiori has received the tag of being ‘outrageously classy’ as he helped his team achieve the third-best defense in Serie A. Bologna conceded only 32 goals in 38 games last season.
