Arsenal women’s coach Jonas Eidevall has decided to resign from his post as head coach of the Gunners women’s team. This decision came from the boss after the team had a difficult start to their 2024-2025 campaign.
The Gunners sit in the sixth position of the Women’s Super League (WSL) table. They have only one of their four opening games in the League. Eidevall was under pressure after his team were defeated by Bayern Munich 5-2 in their opening Champions League fixture.
This defeat came to Arsenal four days after Chelsea registered a 2-1 win over the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium. The form has been underwhelming from the Women’s team this season as they have mostly failed to capitalise on the chances they have got.
Jonas Eidevall joined the Arsenal women’s team in 2021. The manager has led the team to two women’s Super League cups. Arsenal fans were optimistic in the 2022-2023 where they finished third on the table.
The downfall of the women’s team emerged when they were eliminated in the group stage of the women’s Champions League last season. They were eliminated by Paris FC. This elimination led to Arsenal only competing for domestic cups last season.
One big controversy under Eidevall was when Vivianne Miedema left the club. Vivianne scored 125 goals for Arsenal last season. The player was in top form for the Gunners last campaign and left the club as a free agent according to SkySports. Miedema joined title rivals Manchester City. This transfer raised many questions about Eidevall’s coaching.
Arsenal is already in search of a new coach
The Gunners are looking for a new coach after Jonas Eidevall has resigned from his position. Eidevall signed a new three-year contract with the club last October.
This contract extension was offered to the coach after Arsenal’s consecutive top-three finishes in WSL. Jonas has also led his players to win the Women’s League Cup in the past two seasons. The resignation was a shock to the fans but his exit from the club was imminent.
Assistant coach Renne Sleger will take on the coaching role after Eidevall’s exit. She will be the head of the club on an interim basis. The sporting director of Arsenal Edu Gasper expressed his gratitude for Jonas Eidevall’s contributions to the Gunners, saying-
“We thank Jonas for his commitment to the club and achievements after joining us here in 2021”.
Arsenal failed to win any last of their three games under the Swedish manager. These include some brutal defeats like Bayern Munich thrashed them 5-2 in the Champions League. They lost a home game against Chelsea 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium.
Gunners face Valerenga next
The Gunners scouting team is now in search of a new manager. A fresh start with a manager can turn the tides for Arsenal. It would be interesting to see how the interim coach Renne Sleger manages after Eidevall’s departure.
Arsenal will face Valerenga next in their next fixture with the Women’s Champions League. The Gunners would eagerly look to continue their winning ways. A win in the Champions League would be a huge confidence boost for the team.
They have come on top against Rangers, Rosenberg and Hacken to reach the qualifying stage. Arsenal were leading against Bayern in the first half of the main draw. The team fell like pinballs in the second half as the German club scored 5 goals against them.
Arsenal have had a mixed start to to their 2024-2025 campaign whereas their upcoming opponents have not lost a league game since June. Valerenga and Arsenal have not met each other in any league. The Norwegian club is on 11 away game winning streak. They have lost only 2 out of nine games outside Noway.
The Gunners might not be full of confidence after their last Champions League loss. They still have enough squad members who can help the team come out on top. Arsenal will look to register a win against Valerenga to get back in form.
