ISL 2020-21: ATK Mohun Bagan vs FC Goa: Preview and Predicted Line-ups

ATK Mohun Bagan to face FC Goa in the Fatorda Stadium on Wednesday in Indian Super League fixture.

ATK Mohun Bagan were cruising in this season’s ISL in the opening stages. They kept three clean-sheets in the first three games and secured all 9 points. But a shock 2-1 defeat against Jamshedpur FC and a 1-1 draw with Hyderabad FC took them from first to third in the table.

On the other hand, FC Goa had a difficult start to the season. They collected only 1 point from their three opening fixtures. But back to back wins against Kerala Blasters and Odisha FC saw them rise to the sixth spot.

ATK Mohun Bagan vs FC Goa Preview:

The Mariners will be eyeing for the top spot as Mumbai City dropped points against Jamshedpur. They are currently 3 points behind Mumbai, and an ATKMB win will make them joint leaders of the league.

The Kolkata giants are winless in their last two outings and will start on the front-foot to break the chain. Their star player Roy Krishna, who has 4 goals this season, failed to score in the last game. Also, he hasn’t netted against Goa in ISL. A record he surely wants to break on Wednesday.

“I don’t think only one or two players determine their [FC Goa’s] performance. it’s the collective effort of the team. Goa has good players and a good team, as do ATK Mohun Bagan. You can win a match by scoring goals, not with possession.”

– Habas on FC Goa’s Possession Based Football

FC Goa are full of confidence ahead of the game as they won the last two games. They are currently at sixth and want to solidify their spot in the top 4 to make sure they qualify for the play-offs.

Their comeback after a difficult start was heavily based on their striker Igor Angulo’s form. The Spanish forward has netted 6 goals this season and is their top scorer.

“Everybody knows that ATK Mohun Bagan is a good team. In the last two games, maybe the score was not something that was expected but for us, it’s very important to pay attention because all their players have quality and they are compact on set-pieces.

It’s very important to find and attack the space, and when we lose the ball we have to be alert because this club is very aggressive in attack.”

– Juan Ferrando Ahead of the Game

Team News

The Kolkata based team has some injury issues apart from the long-term absentee Michael Soosairaj. Javi Hernandez and Tiri are both injured but the latter is expected to play against Goa.

ATKMB’s defence looked solid throughout the tournament and are the only team yet to concede an open-play goal. Tiri, Sandesh and Pritam have a terrific understanding between them and put good performances in every game.

Roy Krishna has shined usually, also Manvir Singh showed promise with his two goals. Carl McHugh has been another key player for them. Prabir Das and Subhashish Bose also played good football as wide players.

ATKMB’s head coach Antonio Lopes Habas played with a 4-4-2 in the last game because of Tiri’s injury and pushed Pritam to right-back. But now, he is set to use his previously used 3-5-2 formation in the next game.

FC Goa head coach Juan Ferrando is also expected to name the same team as no injury-related issue is present in their squad. Their defence of Seriton Fernandes, James Donachie, Ivan Gonzalez and Saviour Gama looked solid in their last game.

The Gaur’s midfield is also shining with Lenny Rodrigues, Alexander Jesuraj and Brandon Fernandes with Angulo firing up-front. In particular, Brandon has caught the eye of many with his quality on the ball.

ATK Mohun Bagan(3-5-2): GK: Arindam Bhattacharya; DF: Sandesh Jhingan, Tiri, Pritam Kotal; MF: Subhashish Bose, Glan Martins, Carl McHugh, Pronay Halder, Prabir Das; FW: David Williams, Roy Krishna.

FC Goa(4-1-4-1): GK: Nawaz; DF: Seriton Fernandes, James Donachie, Ivan Gonzalez, Saviour Gama; MF: Lenny Rodrigues, Jorge Mendoza, Noguera, Brandon, Jesuraj; FW: Angulo.

Score Prediction: ATK Mohun Bagan 2-1 FC Goa

FC Goa topped the table last season with, then named, ATK coming second. So we can expect a mouthwatering clash at the Fatorda Stadium.
