ISL outfit ATK Mohun Bagan look set to rope in former SC East Bengal keeper Subrata Paul. The 35-year-old will join the Mariners on completing his medicals.
A source close to us confirms – “Subrata Paul is in advanced talks with ATKMB. He will join soon after clearing his fitness test“. However, there are uncertainties surrounding this deal due to a bio bubble breach. If this deal does go through, it will prove to be a major boost for ATK Mohun Bagan.
Spiderman of India
Having started his career at the Tata Football Academy, Subrata Paul was part of the East Bengal squad in the 2007-2009 season. After that, he played for a number of top-division clubs in India. He also plied his trade in Denmark at Vestjaeland FC. Paul began his ISL career at Mumbai City FC and made 95 appearances in the Indian Super League. He also recorded 60 I-League appearances.
One of the legendary goalkeepers in the country, he has been dubbed the “Spiderman of India“. During his time with the national teams, he claimed the AFC Challenge Cup, SAFF Cup, and tri-nation series. He also made 6 appearances for Indian in the AFC Asian Cup.
ATK Mohun Bagan – The season so far
The Mariners, under the tutelage of Antonio Lopez Habas, finished as runners-up in the 2020-21 season. In this season, however, Mohun Bagan is currently in 5th place with 15 points from 9 games.
Owing to a dismal start to the campaign, the club’s management decided to show Habas the door. He was succeeded by Juan Ferrando, who was previously in charge of an energetic FC Goa side.
The team is presently dealing with problems due to Covid-19 credit to a bio bubble breach. An alleged 6 players have tested positive for coronavirus. Training sessions have been suspended to protect the players and prevent the further spread of the virus.
