Atletico Madrid eyeing a possible Thuram deal as Bayern shows interest

Thuram

Atletico Madrid were looking for a replacement for Joao Felix when they offloaded him in January. Marcus Thuram was one of the first names on their radar. In the hope that Borussia Monchengladbach would accept a meager fee, Atletico made a move for the striker. Ultimately, however, they had to back out as the Bundesliga giants demanded €15 million in compensation.

MARCA, however, reports that Atletico Madrid is not giving up on Thuram just yet. Once the attacker becomes a free agent in the summer, they will likely pursue him again.

Despite his age, the 25-year-old has consistently performed well in the Bundesliga. Despite injuries limiting his playing time for most of the last 18 months, the Frenchman has contributed 13 goals and four assists this season. Thuram also played for the French side that reached the 2022 FIFA World Cup final. Despite losing on penalties, he helped France stage a late comeback against the Argentines.

Can Atletico Madrid bag Thuram?

Combined with his pace and power, Thuram’s goalscoring abilities have made him an attractive target for Atletico Madrid. In spite of his status as a free agent, the operation won’t be as straightforward as some may think.

In order to make room for Thuram, Atleti may have to offload some of their players. Joao Felix, Angel Correa, or Alvaro Morata may have to leave so that Atletico can comply with La Liga’s economic regulations.

Due to Thuram being linked to other European giants such as Bayern Munich and others, Atletico must also qualify for the UEFA Champions League. In addition, since the French player is a free agent, he may also demand a signing bonus. For Atletico Madrid to land Marcus Thuram this summer, they must put up serious capital.
