Rangers’ Bala Devi becomes First Indian Woman to Score in a European League


Bala Devi scored her first goal for his new club Rangers FC. As Rangers went on to thrash Motherwell 9-0 in Scottish Women’s Premier League on Sunday night. She also earned his team a penalty.

It was a historical moment in Indian football when Bala Devi after coming as a sub in the 65th minute and then later on latched onto through ball to put the ball in the back of the net in the 85th minute to become the first Indian woman Footballer to score in a top tier Professional European League.

Bala Devi also featured in ‘Old Firm Derby’ between Rangers and Celtic which is one of the oldest rivalries in world football. Rangers are currently second in the points table and are above rivals Celtic.

Bala earned her transfer to Rangers in January after a monstrous season in domestic football scoring whopping 26 times in 7 games for Manipur Police Department in the Indian Women’s League(IWL) 2019. The deadly striker was named AIFF Women’s Player of the year in 2014 and 2015.

Bala is the top international goalscorer in South Asian Football with 65 strikes in 80 games for the Indian Women’s National Team. She has also won 3 Saff championships(2010, 2014,2016).

Observing Bala’s recent success, Bala Devi has been promoted to the Rank of Inspector in her state’s police department by Manipur CM N. Biren Singh.

Oinem Bembi Devi(nicknamed ‘Durga’ of Indian football) and Bala Devi अरे also spreading awareness about Women’s football in the country. They are an inspirational figure for girls to pursue careers in Football.
