Barcelona boss Xavi may convert Dutch midfielder into Busquets replacement

Barcelona

In recent weeks, Sergio Busquets’ future has been a hot topic in Barcelona. The contract of Busquets expires at the end of the season, so the club is actively searching for a replacement.

Xavi Hernandez wants to sign Martin Zubimendi as a defensive midfielder. However, the club is not willing to meet the €60 million release clause of Real Sociedad’s starlet.

Xavi’s plans in converting De Jong into a Busquets replacement

According to a report from SPORT, Barcelona is now considering alternatives. In addition, head coach Xavi is considering having Frenkie de Jong operate at the pivot position and eventually replace Busquets. Meanwhile, Busquets was previously linked to Manchester City according to reports from last year.

Despite a rough start to the campaign, the Dutchman has proven to be one of Barcelona’s best performers this season. With his good performance, he now occupies a more prominent position in the first team, and the club is no longer planning on selling him anytime soon.

De Jong is expected to play a leading role in the Barcelona midfield in the coming years. But Xavi is open to converting him into a defensive midfielder, while Pedri and Gavi can serve as inside midfielders.

Barcelona considers Busquets a vital player beyond the season’s end. He brings a wealth of experience to the squad, and his presence could ease de Jong’s transition.

The midfielder currently has offers from MLS, but Xavi is trying to convince him to stay at Camp Nou until the end of next season. However, the player has yet to decide what to do next.

Reports from various outlets say Barcelona is eyeing for Portuguese footballer Ruben Neves. There are doubts about the Portuguese international’s suitability in the pivot midfield position, so a move for him may depend on Busquets’ consistency and De Jong’s adjustment.
