Barcelona has suffered a shocking exit from the UEFA Champions League after losing to Bayern Munich. However, the Blaugrana were already eliminated due to Inter Milan’s victory against Viktoria Plzen. It is now being reported that the club is considering sales for Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba in January.
The Catalan giants have been eliminated due to their poor performances against Inter Milan home and away. Xavi Hernandez can blame the refereeing for the game at San Siro as they lost 1-0. However, the real dent in qualification hopes was the 3-3 draw against the Italian giants at Camp Nou.
Gerard Pique was one of the worst performers in the draw against Inter Milan in Barcelona. It was clearly evident that the player’s age has caught up with him. The Central defender was not convincing at the back and the team ended up conceding 3 goals at home.
Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba can help raise funds
The two veterans who were a crucial part of the XI when Xavi retired have now become surplus to requirements. Alejandre Balde has overtaken the Spanish full-back in the pecking order and Marcos Alonso serves as the backup full-back. Meanwhile, the club has signed two new centre-backs this summer in addition to the acquisition of Eric Garcia last term. This makes it clear that Gerard Pique is not in the Manager’s plans anymore.
After the recent European exit, the club is also in a financially troublesome position as they will miss out on major revenue. At such a time, sales of these senior players will free up some much important space on the wage bill. It will also be the right step in clearing out the deadwood from the squad. Overall, the decision to move the two legends on is particularly right in this situation for the club!!
