Barcelona have a week remaining in the transfer window. The club have to sort out a lot of things including transfers in and out of the club. They have to find solutions for players like Braithwaite, Umtiti, Depay, and Aubameyang. Most likely, these players will be leaving in the upcoming days. But one player’s future is most uncertain than others. The player wants to stay but the coach does not want him. That player is 21-year-old Sergino Dest. Dest has been left out of the squad for Barcelona’s first 2 matches.
The reason for his snub has not been disclosed but it is likely to be a technical decision. It is said that Xavi is not counting on Dest for the upcoming season. He feels that the club needs to sign a quality right back before going into the season. There is no right back currently at the club that can offer offensive support. But Xavi‘s system needs a right back to be as good on the ball as the player will be off it. Ronald Araujo can be deployed as a defensive right back but the same cannot be said about his offense.
Sergi Roberto is much more of a defensive liability due to his lack of pace. This made the club reconsider their options. There are a lot of names that were discussed by the staff in the last week. But no contacts have been made to the respective clubs. The club is currently thinking about loaning out Sergino Dest for the rest of the season and bringing in a replacement. No club has come in with an offer for Dest, so a loan agreement will be best for both parties. Dest wants to stay and prove but it is highly unlikely that he will play again for the club.
The right-back headache for Barcelona
Barcelona looks like a reinforced club this season. The club has made brilliant investments this season in all positions. It finally looks like they are going to make a statement this season. But one position still feels that it needs improvement. It is the right-back position that Barcelona have struggled to get a player for. Xavi is not really counting on Sergino Dest for that position due to technical reasons.
This had made the club consider serious options for that position. Juan Foyth is one of the options on the table. The right-back is not the perfect one but Xavi feels he can improve him a lot. Foyth can become a big part of the team. But Villareal values him at a good price. Barcelona will have to bring out the chequebook for this one. But before any signing, they first have to make sure departures take place.
