Barcelona skipper Lionel Messi could face a lengthy ban for striking Asier Villalibre in the match against Athletic Club on Monday night.

Barcelona took on Athletic Club Bilbao in the final of the Supercopa de Espana, the match started on Barcelona’s term as they thoroughly dominated the opposition in terms of possession kept and chances created.

However, Athletic Club were on the comeback road as late goals from Inaki Williams and Asier Villalibre cancelled out the two goals scored by Antoine Griezmann. Eventually, match finished for 3-2 with Athletic club taking home the Supercopa de Espana after 120 minutes.

The main talking point of the game was Messi’s red card which he had received in the 120th minute for elbowing Villalibre.

Messi recieves first red card for Barcelona

Messi received his first red card for Barcelona and this red card could be a turning point for Barcelona this season as they would see their star player Messi being suspended for the upcoming games.

According to Football ESPANA, Messi could face up to 12 matches on the sidelines depending on how the disciplinary panel of the Spanish FA view the incident.

If the incident is viewed as being too aggressive then Messi could be suspended for up to 12 matches.

Barcelona who are upset about the incident and the defeat against Athletic are willing to appeal for the ban and they would want the committee to look at the situation with all fairness\equality.

Therefore the club will be looking forward to seeing how the committee reviews the situation and they would want to know how many matches will Messi be suspended for as he could miss out on playing against PSG in the knockout phase of the Champions League in February.

It was a night to forget for Barcelona as they couldn’t get their hands on their first trophy under Koeman and they would see Messi not playing for them in the upcoming matches.

Barcelona who are 3rd in La Liga will take on Elche on the 24th of January and a win against the bottom side club will help them move upwards in the table so Koeman would want Messi less Barcelona to win against Elche.
