According to several reports, FC Barcelona has made a verbal agreement with Georginio Wijnaldum. The Dutchman is a free agent upon the expiry of his contract with Liverpool at the end of the season. It is believed that Barcelona has presented a three-year deal for the midfielder.
The 30-year-old joined Liverpool from Newcastle in 2016 in a deal worth £23 million. Since then he has gone on to become one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League during his five years with the Reds.
Wijnaldum has appeared 237 times while scoring 22 goals and registered 16 assists in all competitions for the Reds. The midfielder has helped Liverpool to win the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and FIFA Club World during his stay.
The Dutchman is out of contract end of the season and has decided to leave the Anfield club. Jurgen Klopp wanted him to stay but the player decided otherwise.
The Midfielder featured in his last for the Reds on Sunday. Liverpool went to win 2-0 against Crystal Palace in their last match of the season. While securing a Champions League spot by finishing third in the league table.
The Anfield fans hosted a warm farewell for Wijnaldum. While Klopp and his teammates also joined the farewell to pay respect for his five years of service.
Wijnaldum was emotional after the match and tweeted “What an emotional rollercoaster the last few days. I’ve received so many great messages from fans, players, and friends all over the world. Thank you all so much. Thank you for everything, I will miss you.”
Barcelona all set to sign Wijnaldum
Wijnaldum was one of Ronald Koeman’s top targets last summer. Barcelona was unable to sign the midfielder last summer, but now look set to sign their man on a free transfer this summer.
Wijnaldum played a starring role for the Netherlands under Ronald Koeman. He used him as an advanced midfielder to provide a thrust in the final third. Signing the midfielder can also prove that Koeman will stay next season and continue serving as manager.
Bayern Munich was rumored to be interested in signing Wijnaldum, but reports suggest he has his heart set on a move to Barcelona. He will become Joan Laporta’s first signing since winning the election for a second stint after the player agreed to a pre-contract.
As per Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona has tabled him an offer of three years at the club. While the club and his agent are still negotiating about his wage. The Catalans have offered him a low salary as compared to Liverpool.
