Barcelona has officially confirmed that the contracts of 4 players are illegal. It means that their new contracts are annulled with alleged criminal activity. These include De Jong, Pique, Ter Stegen, and Lenglet. Lenglet is at Tottenham on loan and does not know when his situation will be solved. As for Pique, he has agreed to lower his salary yet again to help the club. The club had told the players they will take legal action against their contracts.
Frenkie De Jong’s saga does not look to have an ending. Manchester United and Chelsea are still after De Jong. This news is now a bombshell for both the club and De Jong. De Jong has been adamant to leave the club. If he resorts to his old contract, he will be a free agent in 2024. This would be a big disappointment for the club. They received offers up to €85mn ($86.8mn) from Manchester United last month. So letting him leave for free in 2024 would be a big loss for the club.
If things turn out this way, then it will be further evidence of the damage Bartomeu has caused to this club. Laporta and his management are working round the clock to undo the consequences of the actions of the previous board. Frenkie De Jong would want the club to solve the situation as soon as possible. He has admitted how he loves life in Catalonia. But it will be up to the club how they tackle his situation.
Barcelona to lose Ter Stegen next season?
Ter Stegen’s contract also is one of those that is alleged with criminality. The German has been a long servant of the club and is still the preferred one by current manager Xavi. However, he will be thinking if the club will offer him a new contract. His current contract is deemed illegal citing that he cannot be paid according to that.
Problems would arise if he resorts to his old contract. Ter Stegen would become a free agent in 2023. This would see the German start negotiations with other clubs from January next year. This would be a big loss for the Catalans as Ter Stegen is one of the best in World football in his position. Ter Stegen will be having more clubs approach him and will surely make Barcelona up their contract offer.
