Barcelona is off to a great start in the new league season. Xavi and the club have had a massive overhaul of the players. Several outgoings of outcasted players were carried out during the summer. New players were brought in to fit into Xavi’s desired style of play. Lewandowski, Raphinha, Christensen, Kounde, and Kessie were all brought in. The new players have gelled well with their fellow teammates. The team now has a much-improved squad with better chemistry. In 5 league matches this season, FC Barcelona have won 4 while drawing one. In the total matches, they scored 15 goals and conceded just one.
Barcelona starters’ stats in the league
Barcelona has a star-studded line-up. The usual starting line-up includes Lewandowski in the middle with Raphinha and Dembele accompanying him on the flanks. Ansu Fati and Ferran have featured mainly as a substitute. Here’s a look at their performances in the league.
Dembele is one of the best progressors of the ball in the squad. His dynamics and verticality often is the winning piece in most matches. The French forward predominantly plays on the left flank while covering the right side in certain game phases. In the league, he has managed two goals out of an xG (expected goals) of 1.4. he has also managed two assists from an xA (expected assist) of 1.3. he is averaging 0.53 goals and 0.53 assists per 90. Dembele has attempted 18 shots, of which six have been on target. He averages 0.33 goals per shot on target. He has tried 19 dribbles, out of which seven were successful, with 36.8% average successful dribbles.
Raphinha arrived from Leeds, and Cules were already acquainted with his Brazilian samba in the pre-season. The Brazilian has started the new season with great determination. And his performances speak for his zeal. He has an assist and a goal in his five appearances in the league. The Brazilian has averaged 0.29 goals and 0.29 assists per 90. He has also averaged 1.2 xG and 1.4 xA throughout the matches. as was the case in Leeds, he has underscored his expected assist, which will get better as the season progresses. Out of the 16 shots attempted, only three have been on target. He has also attempted 16 dribbles, of which nine have been successful, with an average of 56.3%.
Lewandowski has been Barcelona’s go-to man for goals. Lewa has scored an impressive six goals and two assists in five games. He leads the top scorers’ lists. He has outscored his xG of 5.2 and his xA of 1.6. Lewa has attempted 19 shots with 12 on target. He averages an impressive 0.50 goals per shot on target.
Ansu has been reserved for the substitute’s role as he returns after a horrific season filled with injuries last term. In the short cameos, he has been productive. He has two goals and two assists while starting only a single match out of the five. He averages an xG of 2.1 and an xA of 0.6 this season. The Spanish talent has attempted eight shots, of which five have been on target. He tops this with 0.40%goals per shot on target.
Ferran has had debatable outings this season, mainly starting from the bench. While his off-the-ball movement is still elite, he needs to be more decisive with his action and more efficient in front of goals. He has yet to open his account, thus underscoring his xG of 0.3. in the total seven shots attempted, only one has been on target. This shows his inefficiency.
Critical weeks approach the team ahead, with the El Classico drawing near.
