Chelsea has been in the transfer market on the lookout for centre-backs to reinforce their backline. Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen have both secured moves to La Liga after their contracts expired. Cesar Azpilicueta is also expected to move away from the Blues this summer.
As a result of this transfer activity, Chelsea are in a defensive crisis of sorts. Thiago Silva and Trevoh Chalobah are the only centre-backs left at the club. Therefore, Chelsea have been on the hunt for a couple of centre-backs.
Matthijs De Ligt is one of the top targets on Chelsea’s wishlist as per multiple reports. The Dutch international is currently playing for Juventus. De Ligt became a household name in the 2018-19 season when he led the Ajax team to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
Chelsea seems to have lost ground in the race for De Ligt
In recent weeks, Bayern Munich has emerged as a contender for the signature of Matthijs De Ligt. The Bavarians have already completed the transfer of Noussair Mazraoui, Ryan Gravenberch, and Sadio Mane.
Both Chelsea and Bayern Munich have expressed strong interest in signing the Dutch international but are yet to make any official bids for the player. However, the German giants have stepped up efforts and swiftly moved ahead of their London rivals.
Bayern Munich has reportedly agreed on personal terms with the Dutch international ahead of a probable move to Allianz Arena. It is no secret that De Ligt is a big fan of the Bavarians since a very young age. The defender was linked with a move to Bayern Munich before he finally decided to sign for Juventus.
It is understood that De Ligt is keen to sign for Bayern Munich ahead of Chelsea. However, the transfer will not be straightforward for the Bavarians either. Juventus want an offer in the region of €100 million for the defender. The Old Lady is reportedly not interested in any swap deals and wishes to pursue a straight cash deal.
It will be interesting to see if Bayern Munich will splash an amount close to €100 million in order to lure the defender. However, Chelsea seems to be in a better position to agree on a deal with the club than the German giants. Nonetheless, the transfer saga is interestingly poised and it will be fascinating to see where the Dutch international ends up.
