Liverpool have been recently linked with Bayern Munich’s Austrian superstar David Alaba. The interest stems from the Reds’ growing backline problems after star defender Virgil van Dijk was ruled out for the remainder of the season courtesy of a damaged ACL.
The 28-year-old Austrian fits Jurgen Klopp’s profile perfectly. The 1.80m tall, left-footed defender is fast, strong in tackles, and can play in a variety of positions. With Joel Matip suffering from consistent injuries, Joe Gomez remains the only fit senior centre-back for the club.
Keeping those things in mind, the Reds would be considering signing a defender in January if they are to seriously challenge for back-to-back league titles.
Liverpool and Real Madrid target David Alaba in Bayern contract row
David Alaba will be a free agent next summer, which means that he will be open to discussing terms with other clubs in the January transfer window. Both Liverpool and Real Madrid, amongst other big clubs, have taken interest in signing the Austrian.
This clash arises from Bayern Munich’s retraction of a new contract for the Austrian. Alaba and his agent refused the renewed contract as it did not meet their proposed annual wage of $23 million.
Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness escalated the verbal tug of war after he labeled Alaba’s agent a money greedy piranha. Alaba publicly came out and said that he is hurt and disappointed at how things are turning out for him at the club he ‘loves playing for’.
Alaba offered to Real Madrid amidst interest from Serie A clubs?
Italian news outlet Calciomercato report that Alaba has reportedly been offered to Spanish giants Real Madrid. It also states the interest of several other clubs, including Italian behemoths Juventus and Inter.
Losing a player of Alaba’s quality would surely be detrimental to Bayern’s immediate future. But with the club and player having locked horns over a contract renewal, it will be profitable for the German club to listen to offers in January before Alaba leaves for free next summer.
As they are with any expensive superstar listed for sale, PSG and Manchester have also taken an interest in signing Alaba. Follow Football Express on Facebook to stay up-to-date with the latest transfer rumors.
