English fullback Ben Chilwell is not in a hurry to sign for a new club after his exclusion from Chelsea‘s first team squad. New manager Enzo Maresca has already confirmed the players who are out of his plans. The list includes players like Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell, Trevoh Chalobah and others.
Sterling and Chalobah both managed a late move away on the deadline day. However, Ben Chilwell is yet to decide his future. The English fullback is still on the books at Stamford Bridge but not in Maresca’s plans.
Maresca prefers Euro winning defender Marc Cucurella over Chilwell for the left-back spot. New signing Renato Veiga will be Cucurella’s back up option in that spot leaving no room for the Englishman.
Man United were linked with Chilwell for quiet a long period of time. But the deal never finalized before the deadline day on 30th August.
Chilwell still in thoughts regarding his decision
The 27 year old defender was signed from Leicester in 2020 for a large fee of £45m. Chilwell had played 21 times for the Three Lions. He played his last international match in March against Belgium. However, he was not called up by manager Southgate in the Euro’s competition.
The Englishman was an important part of Chelsea’s UCL winning squad in 2020-21 under manager Thomas Tuchel. He was even appointed the vice-captain for the Blues last season under Mauricio Pochettino. But new manager Enzo Maresca can’t fit Chilwell in his lineup and he was ready to sell him from the beginning.
Since the opening of the transfer window Man United were interested to sign the Englishman. Manager Erik Ten Hag was facing problems at the left-back spot. But due to Chilwell’s history with injuries they hesitated for the move and signed Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich to solve their left back problems.
As of now only Saudi, Dutch and Portuguese league’s transfer window is still open until 3rd September. If Chilwell doesn’t make a move by then, he won’t play professional football before the winter transfer window opens in January.
Chilwell just extended his contract last season until June 2027. He is currently earning £200,000-a-week being the second highest earner after captain Reece James at the West London club. According to Football Insider Chilwell will be happy to stay at London and earn his salary without playing. As he is not keen on moving to any of the countries mentioned above.
Chilwell was even linked with English club Brentford and Turkish club Fenerbahce. He can still join Fenerbahce as the transfer window of Turkey will remain open until 13th September.
What’s ahead for the Englishman’s future
If Chilwell decides to stay at Chelsea without any game time, it can create a bigger problem for his future. It will be hard for him to comeback to professional football after 5 months without a game.
Top clubs didn’t consider to sign the Englishman as he is very injury prone. He missed half of the last season due to injury. Chilwell featured in 21 matches last season starting in only 13 of them.
But it seems that the Englishman wants to stay at London and wait until the January transfer window opens as he wants a move in the top five leagues.
The 27 year old defender is currently valued in between £14.7-24.5m. Chelsea is open to sell Chilwell for a fee near that valuation. Turkish side Fenerbahce is really pushing for Chilwell as they have lost their left back Ferdi Kadioglu to Premier League club Brighton.
Fenerbahce is currently managed by ex-Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho. Chilwell can revive his performance under Jose, as he is one of the best manager in the history of football. He offers freedom to all his players and his system is counter attack based. Chilwell is a great option for Jose as the Englishman can be a great attacking fullback with his pace and passing abilities.
As per current reports Chelsea have agreed on a loan move for the Englishman to the Turkish side. Now it depends on Chilwell if he will join the Turkish giants or stay at London till January.
