Borussia Dortmund has signed Anthony Modeste to provide cover in the absence of Haller

Sebastien Haller has been diagnosed with a malignant testicular tumor recently. The forward completed a transfer from Ajax to Borussia Dortmund earlier this summer. The Ivorian is expected to replace the departed Erling Haaland. However, the unfortunate turn of events have raised concerns for Borussia Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund has been forced to look in the transfer market for another striker to cover for Haller’s absence. Hans-Joachim Watzke, the Chief Executive Officer of Borussia Dortmund, said in relation to the striker situation that:

“To put everything on Youssoufa Moukoko’s shoulders now – he’s 17 years old – that would be a bit too much. So I think we’ll do something again in terms of our personnel. But it’s difficult to find a really good solution, because there aren’t exactly many players on the market. Ideally, something should happen in the next eight to ten days.”

In the aftermath, Borussia Dortmund have recently completed the signing of Anthony Modeste from FC Koln. The signing comes as a relief for the club as they desperately needed reinforcements in attack. Donyell Malen and Karim Adeyemi are utility players that can also play on the wing, thus an out-and-out striker was essential.

Anthony Modeste is the perfect stopgap option for Borussia Dortmund

Sebastien Kehl spoke about the transfer after the club made the announcement and said:

“After our analysis of last season, we made a conscious decision to recruit a classic centre-forward who could bolster our offensive game by offering physicality, a strong aerial presence and a goal threat.”

The Sporting Director for Borussia Dortmund further said that:

“In light of Sébastien Haller’s illness, we are glad that, in Anthony Modeste, we have been able to add another striker with this profile to our squad for the current season. He is a seasoned pro who knows the Bundesliga very well, who scored 20 goals last season and who, with his skillset, can fill the exact role that our coach Edin Terzic envisages for the BVB style of football.”

The Frenchman will play his eighth Bundesliga season in 2022/23. The forward will wear the number 20 for Borussia Dortmund this season. Anthony Modeste is excited about this step forward in his career and was full of optimism for this opportunity.

The new signing said that:

“I am very grateful to 1. FC Köln for the wonderful and successful time I had there. However, I have now decided to make a change. The offer from BVB has given me a special chance to play in the Champions League at my age and to prove myself at the highest level. I am delighted about this opportunity and I promise that I will give everything for the success of the team and the club.”

Borussia Dortmund is hopeful that Anthony Modeste will fill the gap in the squad and help the club challenge for the Bundesliga title after a long time.
