Borussia Dortmund vs Bayer Leverkusen: Preview and Predicted Line-ups

Borussia Dortmund will take on Bayer Leverkusen in their final match in the Bundesliga. The match will kickoff at the Signal Iduna Park on the 22nd of May, Saturday.

For both teams, the match will be a dead rubber, as there is nothing at stake to play for. While Dortmund have qualified for the Champions League, Leverkusen have ensured Europa League for the next season.

The match however will also see some emotional farewells. Dortmund legend Lukasz Piszczek has confirmed that he will depart with the Black and Yellows at the end of this season. The twins Lars Bender and Sven Bender of Leverkusen have also announced retirement at the end of the season.

Dortmund goes into the matchup brimming with confidence. They completed an incredible turnaround in form as they have won their last 6 Bundesliga matches, qualifying for the Champions League next season. This red hot form was also emulated in their DFB Pokal triumph over RB Leipzig.

Leverkusen on the other hand was had a mixed set of results. They have drawn their last two matches, yet were fortunate to ensure a Europa League qualification with one game remaining. Injuries have piled up and are a major reason for their lack of consistency.

Both Dortmund and Leverkusen have sacked their managers midseason. Currently, interim managers Edin Terzic (Dortmund) and Hannes Wolf (Leverkusen) are at the helm. Leverkusen last week have announced Gerard Seoane, current manager of BSC young Boys as their new manager from next season. Dortmund had previously announced the arrival of Marco Rose as their manager from the start of the 2021-22 season.

Dortmund will be without their long-term absentees. This include Marwin Hitz,  Mateu Morey,Youssoufa Moukoko, Marcel Schmelzer, Axel Witsel and Dan-Axel Zagadou. Lukasz Piszczek is reported to have a muscle injury but will be mostly available for his final Dortmund game.

Leverkusen have been ravaged by injuries. They will be without Lucas Alario, Santiago Arias, Leon Bailey, Lars Bender (knee), Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Exequiel Palacios and Daley Sinkgraven (knee). They will be also without Nadiem Amiri and Edmond Tapsoba, both of whom are suspended after collecting their fifth yellow card of the season.

Patrick Schick is also a doubt for the game, as Leverkusen might not risk him before the start of the European Championship.

Borussia Dortmund: Burki; Piszczek, Akanji, Hummels, Guerreiro; Can, Bellingham, Dahoud; Sancho, Haaland, Reus

Bayer Leverkusen: Hradecky; Tah, Dragovic, Bender; Diaby, Aranguiz, Demirbay, Wendell; Bellarabi, Wirtz, Gray

Predicted Scoreline: Borussia Dortmund 4 – 1 Bayer Leverkusen

The match has few consequences for both teams. However, this will be an emotional occasion as Lukasz Piszczek, Lars Bender, and Sven Bender, will all play their final match. There is also the possibility that the game might be the last one Jadon Sancho plays for Dortmund, as chances for his transfer away from Dortmund is very high. Players will be looking to end the season on a high and also send a positive message to the incoming managers.
