Fans left speechless after midfield maestro Casemiro turns the tide in Europa League thriller.
Casemiro had an outstanding game against Lyon
Manchester United earned a sensational 7-6 (on aggregate) win against Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals. However, not many of them, paid attention to the man who changed the fate of the tie, Casemiro.
Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire found their names in the headlines after coming to United’s rescue. But the veteran Brazilian midfielder was the heartbeat behind all three goals in extra-time.
At 4-2 down on the night, he made a surging run into the box and was brought down for the penalty. Fernandes scored the spot kick to set the wheels in motion for United’s comeback. Moments later he coolly assisted Mainoo at the edge of the box.
Just seconds after, the Brazil international once again stepped up. This time turning playmaker by providing in a perfect cross that found Maguire at the far post. Harry directed the ball into the goal for the match-winner.
A dominant display beyond the scoreboard
The former Real Madrid star wasn’t just pulling strings up front, he was everywhere on the pitch. He has often been criticised for his form over the past two campaigns. The £70 million man reminded everyone of the elite player he truly is.
Against Lyon, he also led with the most duels won (nine) and chances created. He also made three tackles, recovered possession seven times, and cleared the ball eight times. It was a complete midfield performance that had shades of his Los Blancos glory days.
Now, United will take on Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals. The Spanish side knocked out Rangers and will meet the Red Devils on May 1 and 8. The first leg will take place in Bilbao while the second leg at the Old Trafford.
History isn’t on United’s side at the moment. Additionally, they haven’t beaten Bilbao since 1957. But if Casemiro continues to play like this, anything is possible.
