Southampton 1-0 Liverpool: Post-Match Analysis

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Liverpool lost their second game in the Premier League this season after they were beaten away to Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium by 1-0. An early goal from Danny Ings was the only goal in this match. This is now the longest time without a goal under Jurgen Klopp for Liverpool.

This defeat means Liverpool have now lost more points than they did in the whole last season. After scoring seven against Crystal Palace they now scored only one goal in the last three games.

Liverpool now earned only 2 points in their last 3 games against West Brom, Newcastle United, and Southampton which is an unfamiliar scene for Jurgen Klopp’s side. Not winning against lower teams and not scoring goals.

With this defeat, Liverpool will remain at the top with 33 points in 17 games and Southampton are now 6th and got 29 points in 17 games.

Southampton 1-0 Liverpool Team news:

Liverpool made three changes from their last match against Newcastle United. As Liverpool manager opted to go with Jordan Henderson in defence for the injury issues they have at the back.

Summer signing Thiago started the game after recovering from an injury issue and also Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain started in the midfield after almost five months and it was his first start this season.

Southampton made three changes from their last match away to West Ham United. Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy was out of the squad due to illness and Fraser Foster replaced him and Theo Walcott and Danny Ings led the line for the Saints.

Southampton 1-0 Liverpool match analysis:

Straight away after the start of the game, Southampton were ahead from a great set-piece move. Great delivery from James Ward-Prowse Trent Alexander-Arnold could not clear it and a great finish from former Liverpool striker Danny Ings.

After getting behind inside just 2 minutes Liverpool dominated the position but they could not manage a single on target in the first half.

Nathan Tella the substitute for injured Moussa Djenepo could have bigger the margin for the Saints but his shot from just outside the box went narrowly wide.

A great end to end the first half as both sides trying to press each other and play through the press. Both the sides playing a high defensive line which made it pretty entertaining to watch.

Liverpool came out in the second half all guns blazing. They had 90% position in the early part of the second half but thanks to great defending and poor creativity in front of the goal Liverpool could not manage a single on target.

Although it was a very end to end game but neither goalkeeper had to make any significant save.

Liverpool managed only one on target in the 75th-minute mark, a very tame shot from Sadio Mane didn’t trouble the keeper Foster.

Notable Performances:

Kyle Walker-Peters(RB) – (8/10)(Southampton): Kept Sadio Mane quite and gone forward in odd occasions and overall a very good performance.

Jack Stephens(CB) – (7.5/10)(Southampton): Made a few great blocks and good in the air as well. Didn’t give Liverpool time in the box. A great outing for him.

Trent Alexander-Arnold(RB) – (3/10)(Liverpool): Made the bad mistake on the Southampton goal and lost position 38 times which is highest by anyone else. A very bad performance from him.

Southampton’s next Premier League match is against Leicester City at King Power Stadium on 16th January.

Liverpool will play away to Aston Villa in their next match in the FA Cup on 8th January and their next Premier League match will be at Anfield against arch-rival Manchester United on 17th January.
