Chelsea are prepared to make a record-breaking bid for Wesley Fofana

Wesley Fofana

Chelsea has been in the transfer market for defensive reinforcements all summer. The club completed the signing of Kalidou Koulibaly earlier this summer, however, the Blues are not done yet. Wesley Fofana has been identified as an important target for the club in this window.

Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen both left for the La Liga after their contracts expired. Meanwhile, the Blues lost out on their first-choice target Matthijs De Ligt to Bayern Munich. The Dutchman preferred to sign for the German Champions ahead of Chelsea. The club also failed to sign Jules Kounde from Sevilla despite being the favorites to sign the Frenchman for weeks.

Amidst all this, Chelsea has identified Wesley Fofana as an important target for the squad. The young Frenchman was signed from AS Saint-Etienne by Leicester City. The Foxes have already turned down a bid from Chelsea for the talented central defender. However, Chelsea has not given up yet.

Wesley Fofana can become the most expensive defender ever

Chelsea are in a state of panic at the current juncture. The club has not been able to sign a second central defender since acquiring Kalidou Koulibaly. As the end of the transfer window draws closer, the club is reportedly prepared to make a record-breaking offer for the French defender.

The Blues have not hesitated to break world record transfer fees to fill gaps in the squad before as well. The club paid a world record fee for Kepa Arrizabalaga to sign the goalkeeper in 2018. Chelsea is prepared to shell out big money for Wesley Fofana as well.

The Leicester City defender is considered to be one of the brightest prospects in central defence and can become one of the best defenders in the world in upcoming years. The Foxes have been reluctant to sell their star defender, however, a world record fee might tempt them.

It will be interesting to see if the American ownership in London will be willing to smash the world record transfer to secure the Frenchman this summer!
