Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has openly disagreed with match officials and said that United star should have seen the red card. The match ended in a draw with both teams sharing a point, but one decision caused a lot of controversy.
Chelsea visited Old Trafford for the Premier League clash against Man United yesterday. The match was ended in a 1-1 draw with both clubs sharing a point each. This point helped Chelsea to move in the top 4 of Premier League table.
United took the lead when Bruno Fernandez scored from a penalty spot in 70th minute. Just 4 minutes later, Chelsea equalised the game as Moises Caicedo was able to score a superb volley. It was the last goal of match but there was some late drama in additional time.
Cole Palmer was tackled by Lisandro Martinez and was quickly booked by refree. His studs made contact high on Palmer’s legs and hence the challenge was checked by video assistant refree (VAR). But, after the checks the decision was not reversed which had the Chelsea boss fuming after the match.
Chelsea boss Maresca thinks United player deserved red card
Firstly, Maresca said that the decision was quite clear of all of us, but the refree took a different decision. This shows that the Chelsea boss was not at all happy as he was expecting a different decision.
Maresca then said that he had a talk with refree after the game. He told the refree that if a player does not go for a ball and instead goes for a player it is a clear red card.
“When there’s no intention to go for the ball and you go for the player’s legs, for me there’s no doubt for that decision. I think it’s quite clear that it was a red” – Maresca speaking about the incident.
Palmer was able to see out the remaining minutes. Luckily, the injury does not seem like a serious one although he was with ice in the changing room. Maresca said that they are waiting for the decision and hopefully it is nothing serious. Maresca’s comments are as per Independent.
The Blues will now play against Arsenal in the weekend. They do have Conference League clash in between but Palmer is not registered for the European competition and hence will recieve enough rest.
