Chelsea are doing really well under Enzo Maresca who has helped them move to 4th position in the Premier League. Now, former English player Robbie Mustoe has said that Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana can develop into world-class player.
Cole Palmer has already been viewed as a player with very bright future. He deserves that too as he has been outstanding since joining from Man City last year. Last season, Palmer was the only name catching all the attention.
But Maresca has now been able to transform other players who are starting to get attention they deserve. One of those is Nicolas Jackson who was trolled last season. Other than Jackson, now Wesley Fofana has caught eye of former english footballer.
Robbie Mustoe backs Chelsea defender to become world-class
Fofana joined Chelsea last year but only played 20 games in his debut season. He faced injury quickly after joining the Blues. But, this season Fofana is looking in great shape and has played 9 out of 10 league games. He was suspended for 1 game which is the only game he missed.
Robbie Mustoe had some really good words for Fofana after the Man United clash. He praised the player’s pace and said that the Frenchman looks confident on the ball. He added that, everyone should keep a close eye on Fofana when he is playing to understand his quality.
“He’s defender and got great pace. I think he’s got potential to be an outstanding, really world-class centre-back” – Mustoe speaking to NBC Sports.
Maresca’s centre back pairing this season
It seems like Maresca has found his centre back pairing. He has used Fofana and Levi Colwill as his starting defenders in almost all matches. As said earlier, Fofana has only missed 1 game due to suspension. On the other hand, Colwill has started in all 10 league games.
Chelsea have conceded 10 goals in 9 games when Fofana and Colwill have started. This numbers are concerning but we have to keep in mind that both defenders are still very young. Fofana is 23 while Colwill is just 21 years old.
In addition, Robert Sanchez has not been good at shot stopping. Chelsea can improve their defence if they sign a new keeper who can help Fofana and Colwill by keeping regular clean sheets.
