The 33-year-old superstar Messi has his contract expiring in June 2021 and would be available as a free agent. He is unlikely to sign a contract extension at Camp Nou after his derailed relationship with the club.
According to Spanish Journalist Guillem Balague via ESPN, the Blues are looking to sign Messi.
Manchester City have been upfront ever since his rumours of leaving the club after Josep Bartomeu’s departure in the summer.
Messi to Chelsea? Sounds Good!
Big-spending Chelsea has been impressive in the summer transfer window after spending over £250 million. They are currently in 3rd place with just 3 points behind leaders Liverpool in English Premier League.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Messi was close to joining Chelsea way back in 2013-14 summer transfer window. Adidas offered to pay around half of the transfer fee (€210 million) for this transfer to occur.
According to a report from the Sport Bible claims that Gianluca Di Marzio stated about Messi and the then Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho’s communication. He concluded that Messi’s father collapsed that deal.
However, in a Youtube interview, Guillem Balague said that Blues are “in the equation” to sign Messi.
“Chelsea will insist they want to hear everything that is going on. If they have the money, they will want to be involved too. Remember, there is no transfer fee.”– Guillem Balague
Thiago Silva has extended his contract for another year and Blues are looking to sign David Alaba also. With Messi in the lineup, Chelsea could become firm title challengers.
Messi to Manchester City? Looks Good!
Manchester City is currently at 8th position in the Premier League. They have been in their worst form this season under head coach Pep Guardiola.
Guardiola recently extended his contract until 2023 but the team lacks quality nowadays. However, Guardiola doesn’t want his favorite player to come to City.
“Messi is a Barcelona player. I said it a thousand times. As a fan, I want Leo to finish there.”– Pep Guardiola
The city hasn’t been impressive this season due to the lack of goals scored (15 goals in 9 matches so far).
After a recent 5-0 win against Burnley, he said that his team had lost the joy of playing football. The reunion of the legendary duo of Guardiola-Messi would surely be solving Man City’s issues upfront.
Financial crisis at Barcelona
FC Barcelona have been affected the most in the recent COVID-19 pandemic situation after the new salary cap decided by La Liga. According to a report by Diario Sport, the club needs to save almost €300 million for avoiding bankruptcy.
Recently, a wage cut was accepted by the players in order to save around €122-172 million. Barca let big-earners in the club like Luis Suarez, Arturo Vidal, and Ivan Rakitic to compensate for the loss faced.
Other losses include €47 million in matchday revenue, €35 million in sales at the club shops, and €18 million in ticketing from the museum based at Camp Nou.
Messi had a turn of events that ultimately lead to Bartomeu’s departure and Messi staying at the club. However, the new club President election would be crucial for Messi’s decision to leave or stay. Barca are even struggling in La Liga at 14th position in the table.
