Chelsea FC: August report

Chelsea have started their season with mixed results. Two wins, two losses and a draw over 5 games in all competitions. After watching Chelsea play against Manchester City, Wolves and Crustal Palace in the league it can be said that even though they have not played exceptionally well, a few players have already stepped up from where they left off last season. Judging a manager after just 5 games is harsh but let’s examine their overall performance in the month of august.

In the League

Chelsea played three matches in the league in august. Let’s talk about them one by one:

Chelsea Vs Manchester City (2-0 loss)

Chelsea started the campaign on 18th august, this was the big opener of the season. Simply put, Chelsea looked like a Conference League team and City looked like 4-peat team. City’s midfield was way better than Chelsea’s and Kovacic, who was sold by Chelsea for 30 million pounds outclassed both Caicedo and Enzo, who were bought for a combined quarter billion pounds. Chelsea did create a few chances but nothing threatening. Nkunku looked dangerous but was subbed off at the 59th minute. Lavia came on the second half and looked like Chelsea’s best player. City were without Walker, Rodri and Foden but Chelsea could not capitalize on this fact. Man City easily won the match, it wasn’t much of a contest.

Chelsea Vs Wolves (6-2 win)

Their second match in august was against Wolves, Chelsea looked totally different offensively. Away at Wolves, they scored six past the opposition keeper. Palmer dropped a masterclass, providing inch perfect balls cutting the opposition back line. Noni Madueke scored a hat trick; he showed excellent finishing abilities when the opportunity presented itself. Madueke was also getting past the defenders with ease. Wolves gave the ball away cheaply multiple times and Chelsea’s performance in the final third was exceptional. Palmer had multiple assists and a goal, Madueke scored a hat trick with Jackson and Felix bagging a goal each. Chelsea looked good in the final third but lacked structure while defending.

Chelsea Vs Palace (1-1 draw)

The final league match in august was against Crystal Palace. After suffering an opening day loss at the Bridge, Maresca was hoping to get his first victory at home. Chelsea was the better team, they were better offensively and defensively. The midfield looked solid for the first time this season and the attackers were being fed with precise balls and eventually Jackson scored a goal in the 25th minute. In the second half, the picture was different, Chelsea could not get that second goal to ease the pressure. Eze showed why he is rated as one of the best forwards in the league after he equalized with a banger. The match went on ahead, with both teams squandering chances. Chelsea’s inability to kill the game came back to haunt them like many times last season. They surely played like the better team but a below par performance in the second half meant that Maresca remains winless at home in the league.

The August Report

Chelsea have looked inconsistent, and average. The defense looks unstable with them making many errors while playing from the back. The midfielders look average, even though Caicedo has looked better than last year, he and Enzo don’t look like midfielders worth a 100 million pounds each. The attack looks good, Jackson and Madueke look more confident than ever. With Nkunku, Sancho, Neto and Mudryk also available, getting goals won’t be the problem for Chelsea. The lack of experience and leadership at the back and in the midfield is evident with Silva and Gallagher gone. Chelsea will have days like the match against wolves, but it’s their inability to keep a clean sheet and play calmly that needs to be addressed as soon as possible.
