Chelsea’s squad is yet concerning: Frank Lampard

Chelsea icon Frank Lampard came out revealing his concern for the Blues big squad rebuild that they have been doing since in the last four transfer market windows.

The Blues enjoyed a commanding 6-2 win over Wolves on Sunday. But despite the overwhelming display they suffered a loss to minnows Servette in their Conference League play-off match.

Another disappointment came after the Blues ended with a stalemate against Crystal Palace at the Stamford Bridge. The game was not so good for the Maresca as two of his men picked up injuries while their duty at the Bridge.

Improvements were clearly visible in the newly-building squad, but there will be issues and varying performances from the new young guns and also the veterans until they find their accurate feet in the game.

Chelsea legend Lampard was on the Match of the Day 2. He claimed that the young players will face inconsistency until they are fully aware and acquired of the game.

The pundit is encouraged by the talent at Chelsea. He believes their forward players can cause a lot of problems for opposing teams this season.

The former Blue also states that Stamford Bridge will have good days as well as bad days this season. He believes there is now a better feeling in West London after his time here 18 months ago.

Lampard’s message for the West Londoners

“In terms of where they are at, Maresca mentioned today that they aren’t the same team that won the Champions League and he is right,” Lampard said on BBC’s Match of the Day.

“I was there 18 months ago and at that point. It was a really low point from my point of view because it didn’t feel like the club that it had been which was so successful for 20 years.

“A lot of that was the environment and getting that right. I feel like they are on an upward curve but there will be good days and bad days because of the squad.

“But there is a lot of talent and if they can keep improving. Especially at the top end of the pitch, they can give teams a lot of problems.”

Lampard is certainly right about the talent available to Maresca. But even those top players at Stamford Bridge, it does not make the job an easy one for the former Leicester City coach.

Chelsea squad update

The British transfer window finally closed, ending a typically relentless summer of incomings and outgoings at Chelsea.

Last month, The Athletic published an update on 53 (yes, you read that number correctly) players either listed on the first-team page of Chelsea’s official website, loanees signed as part of Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly’s global youth recruitment drive and any player who had appeared for the club in a competitive match in the 2023-24 season.

Chelsea were one of the Premier League’s biggest spenders this summer with an outlay of £202.6m. Around half of that was spent on Pedro Neto (£54m) and Joao Felix (£46.3m).

The Blues also recorded table-topping returns for cash received from player sales, with £172.3m coming into the club.

According to TEAMtalk, Greek club AEK Athens have now made an opening offer to sign Chelsea’s David Datro Fofana on loan. They’ve got until 11 September before the transfer deadline in Greece.

It is understood that the Blues rejected the approach for their 21-year-old striker, though.

For Enzo Maresca, the man appointed as Mauricio Pochettino’s permanent successor over the summer. There have been positives to take out of all three games but also reminders of the challenge he has in front of him to get this Chelsea side competing at the top once again. Now, just three weeks into the season, we have our first international break of the campaign to contend with.
