Chelsea have reportedly contacted the club for a potential January move for the Portuguese. The Blues are willing to pay the £83 million transfer clause of Tomas in order to do that. As they desperately want to improve their weak backline.

As per Fabrizio Romano, the Blues already had Tomas on their radar and wanted to sign him last summer. But by the time they made a decision, it was too late. However, he also mentioned that Chelsea will return for the 22-year-old in the upcoming windows.

Chelsea are actively monitoring the center-back market. Let’s see if it’s going to be January, or if it’s going to be summer.”

Tomas Araujo to compete at the highest level

Tomas Araujo has only played 38 games so far for Benfica. But he is already considered as a reliable and sensible player at the club. It shows how mature of a player he is. The 22-year-old was even praised by veteran center-back Jan Vertonghen, who played with him at the Portuguese topflight. The former Spurs defender claimed a bold statement saying,

“He has everything to be one of the best defenders in the world in a year or two.”

Tomas Araujo must had been glad hear those words from such an ace defender. However, he will need to maintain his level and thrive for more to become the best and keep the words of Jan. If he joins Chelsea in the near future, then he will have to fight for his place to become the first-choice option. It will not be easy but Tomas has a long career left ahead of him.
