The Blues are interested to improve their defence next year. Now, Chelsea have been linked with Alex Grimaldo who is seen as an important player by Bayer Leverkusen.
Chelsea have Marc Cucurella as their main left back right now. But, he has faced injury problems ever since he moved to West London. This causes Blues concerns when the Spaniard is absent.
Enzo Maresca has used either Levi Colwill or Recce James as left back when Cucurella is absent. It is not the preferred position of either of them which makes Chelsea weak on left flank.
Maresca does have Ben Chilwell but it seems like he is not being trust at all. Chilwell is very likely to depart from Stamford Bridge next year and it will open up space for new face.
Chelsea keen to sign Alex Grimaldo
According to Fichajes, the Blues are keeping tabs on Alex Grimaldo. Grimaldo is 29 years old now and has market value of around €45 million. He had a great season last time where he helped Leverkusen to win the Bundesliga title.
The German side views Grimaldo as an important player. They had many offers for Grimaldo which were rejected. The Spaniard was able to find the back of the net 12 times along with picking 17 assists in 51 matches. These stats alone justify why he is being viewed so important by Leverkusen.
However, Leverkusen may find it hard to do it again and keep hold of Grimaldo next year. If not in January, they will surely have to think about selling Grimaldo in summer. Surely they will demand a hefty fee which they can re-invest in the fullback’s proper replacement.
The Blues can get a quality fullback and bolster their defence along with enhancing their attack if they sign Grimaldo. He will also compete with his national teammate Marc Cucurella for the starting spot. It will be interesting to see if Chelsea view him as potential target and make any moves to sign him.
