Chelsea are having one of a kind transfer window this season. They have signed numerous players and it is hard to keep track of them even for the Blues fans. Well, the transfer saga does not stop at their last signing of Pedro Neto from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Chelsea have been looking for a quality striker for quite some time now. Even in the January window, they were linked heavily to Victor Osimhen. Chelsea board spent around £100 million for Romelu Lukaku in the 22/23 season. However, that deal turned out to be a big flop for them as they let him go on loan to Inter Milan in the next season and then loan deal to AS Roma.
The board is determined to bring a quality striker and Osimhen was one of the main targets with other few options too. The recent updates just boost Chelsea’s approach for the Nigerian. Osimhen is reportedly planning to leave Napoli and also handed a transfer request last weekend.
Osimhen’s time at Napoli is over
Napoli signed Osimhen in the 20/21 season from Lille. Since then, Osimhen’s impact at the Italian side has been very influential. In 133 games, he scored 76 goals and provided 18 assists for the team. He also helped Napoli lift the Serie A title after a few decades.
However, now seems to be the time when the player will part ways with the club to look for a different opportunity. Chelsea are the favorites to sign the player. There has been interest from the Blues for quite a long time. The board also once discussed the prospect of a Lukaku-Osimhen swap deal.
Osimhen however wasn’t the only striker Chelsea were going after. They were pursuing Atletico Madrid’s Samu Omorodion for a fee around €40 million. Although, according to a report by The Athletic, that deal has collapsed and the player won’t be joining Chelsea.
Osimhen is keen on joining a competitive team and player at a higher standard. However, his release clause of €130 million can cause some issues for the clubs interested to sign him. Meanwhile, the new Napoli manager Antonio Conte highly rates Romelu Lukaku. The Italian manager is keen to bring the striker to Napoli. Antonio Conte previously coached Romelu Lukaku at Inter Milan in 2021 where they won the Serie A title.
Napoli’s director has revealed that Osimhen has handed in his transfer request. “Victor has told us that he wants to leave the club. There were also speculations of him leaving last season. We all will see what will happen in the next remaining days of the transfer window.”
The battle between Chelsea and PSG for the Nigerian
Chelsea are not the only club interested to bring the Nigerian to their club. Paris Saint Germain (PSG) are also interested to sign Victor Osimhen. They also have the financial boost to make this deal go through.
On one hand, Chelsea are trying to bring a quality and a mature striker who can guide their young squad to the correct path. They need a leader and a player with a quality to excel in the league. Osimhen seems to be the player of their kind.
On the other, there is PSG. They recently let go of their club’s face and their best player Kylian Mbappe. Mbappe’s contract expired this season and instead of renewing, he decided to join his dream club Real Madrid. PSG need a new face and a high profile player in their team. Osimhen is the kind of player who can do the same for PSG.
It will be interesting to see where Osimhen will end up this summer. Less than 20 days are left in this summer transfer window. It surely is going to be a heated few days for the Nigerian. Only the time will tell what will actually happen.
