Chelsea are on the verge of losing Christopher Nkunku. Nkunku may not leave in january but a move is very likely next summer. There is only one condition that will help the Blues in keeping hold of the French international.
Nkunku joined Chelsea last summer for a transfer fee of €60 million from RB Leipzig. He had a great 2022/23 season where he scored 23 goals and picked 7 assists in just 36 matches. This helped him to reach the market value of €80 million and hence Chelsea fans had very high hopes from him.
But things did not went as plan when Nkunku moved to West London. He faced an injury which kept him away from football for four months last season. He made a comeback but frequently faced injury issues.
As a result, Nkunku played only 14 matches last season. But, this season the Frenchman has been fit and hence more was expected from him. Nkunku had a very good pre-season under new boss Maresca but has failed to claim his place as main player.
Nkunku is still the top scorer for Chelsea this season with 10 goals. But only 1 out of those 10 is in Premier League. And frankly there is so little to argue why he is not used in Premier League as Nicolas Jackson is miles better than Nkunku at the moment.
Christopher Nkunku to leave Chelsea next summer?
Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg says that Nkunku can move away from Chelsea if the current situation does not improve soon. By current situation he meant to say Nkunku not being regular starter for Chelsea.
At the moment, Nkunku is very unlikely to replace Nicolas Jackson. In addition, this is not even his preferred position either. Maresca plays Nkunku as number nine so that he receives enough game time. But a player who is currently rated at €65 million by Transfermarkt deserves playing at the highest level.
This may force Nkunku to leave Chelsea next summer with top clubs already interested in him. The Blues view him as an important player but will have to respect the player’s choice too. In addition, they will have to let some players go due to their huge squad depth and PSR rules.
