The Blues are in the race against top European giants for Sporting CP‘s Viktor Gyokeres, who is considered as one of the best striker in the world right now. Gyokeres has been sensational since joining the Portuguese side last year. After being involved in 58 goals and assists last season, the 26-year-old striker has been under the radar of top clubs around the globe.
The Swede has continued his top form this season also. As he has already scored 23 goals in just 19 games already across all competitions. Sporting’s UCL clash against Man City last Wednesday, was considered as a ‘test’ for the striker in big games. And Gyokeres literally topped that test, as he scored a magnificent hat-trick.
After that performance, one thing has been clarified. That, Viktor Gyokeres isn’t just a one season wonder. He is a machine like Haaland and Cristiano Ronaldo who just wants to score. And that is the reason why clubs like Man United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Barcelona and others are ready to pay that £83 million release clause set by Sporting.
Chelsea’s reasons to buy Viktor Gyokeres
While the Blues are slowly getting back on track under Maresca, their problem regarding striker is also reducing. As the likes of Jackson, Nkunku and Felix are doing fine enough. So, at this stage going for Viktor Gyokeres can be a little controversial step.
But former Blues midfielder John Obi Mikel gave a interesting reason for signing another striker. In his recent episode of The Obi One Podcast, he claimed,
“Nicolas Anelka and Fernando Torres were brought in to ensure Didier Drogba stayed on his toes. That healthy competition pushed him to be the phenomenal player he was.”
Further Obi added that, the Blues should bring in another top striker like Osimhen or Gyokeres, so that Jackson always stays in pressure to do better. However, Football Express says, it will be a very bad decision to pull out that trick on Nicolas Jackson.
The arrival of Viktor Gyokeres to Chelsea will cause unnecessary overload upfront. And it is also clear that Gyokeres will occupy that first choice number 9 role. Which will just cause problems for the development of Jackson rather than creating ‘healthy competition’.
