Chelsea ownership split: what you need to know

Currently there is a dispute between Chelsea owners regarding the ownership. Two owners are interested to buy each other out and take full control of The Blues. The Premier League giants are currently owned by two groups. Those two groups bought Chelsea from Roman Abramovich. Here is all the information regarding ownership broken down in simple words.

Chelsea ownership structure

Roman Abramovich was forced to sell Chelsea after Russia invaded Ukraine. Two groups combined together to buy the club by paying £2.5 billion. The first group is commonly known as Todd Boehly’s group whereas the second one is Clearlake Capital.

Boehly is most famous Chelsea owner but he has only 12.8% stake. He has Mark Walter and Hansjorg Wyss as his allies who also have same stake as him. These three combine to have 38.5% stake.

The rest 61.5% stake is owned by Clearlake Capital. Behdad Eghbali and Jose E Feliciano are co-founders of the equity firm.

What exactly is the dispute between the owners

Chelsea fans are constantly hearing about the ownership dispute. Boehly and Clearlake both want to buy each other out. None of them is willing to sale and instead want to increase their stake.

Clearlake are willing to stay patient whereas Boehly is unwilling to wait and want the matter to be solved in the next two months. Earlier, the both groups seemed to understand each other perfectly. It could be seen with the amount they spent in transfer market. However, after spending £1.75 billion, the two groups feel to part ways as soon as possible.

To start with, Boehly’s side feels like Eghbali is too involved in footballing operations. They feel like the football experts should be left on their own to do their job. However, Clearlake have backed Eghbali and said that he only looking in the financial aspects.

Clearlake are more powerful at the current stage when it comes to Chelsea ownership. However, Sky Sports revealed earlier that all the major decisions are taken only after the approval from Eghbali, Feliciano and Boehly. This gives equal power to Boehly and hence the future of Chelsea’s ownership remains uncertain.

Currently there are four possibilities available. First is Boehly buys Clearlake stake. Second is vice versa where Clearlake gain full control. Third is the dispute is resolved and both groups compromise. The last option is third party getting involved in all this matter.
