Chelsea hosted Newcastle in an action-packed Premier League tie at Stamford Bridge after returning to winning ways since their previous game. The English midfielder Cole Palmer proved himself once again, shutting all his doubters down, the goal and assist that put the icing on Chelsea’s thrilling 2-1 victory were compliments of this player. Maresca’s side had returned to winning ways in the league. Below are the Chelsea players with a summary of how they played.
Chelsea Player Rating
Goalkeeper And Defenders:
.Robert Sanchez: (3.5/5) Robert Sanchez wasn’t himself, he could not do much to stop Newcastle’s goal, by Alexander Isak, but his passing was awful. Some of his distribution attempts were dangerous for Chelsea.
.Malo Gusto: (3.9/5) Malo Gusto was one of the bright sparks in defense, he made room to advance, making spaces for Chelsea’s attacking players. In defense, he stayed on his feet, particularly against Harvey Barnes, and assisted in helping the team remain strong at his flank.
.Wesley Fofana: (3.8/5) Returning from suspension, Wesley Fofana looked sound. He made some picture-perfect tackles, including a block on Almiron which kept Chelsea in the game.
.Levi Colwill: (3.9/5) Levi Colwill played with confidence. He carried the ball with assurance and made good decisions. He was part of the build-up that led to Chelsea’s second goal.
.Reece James: (3.6/5) Actually, Reece James played as left-back, and the player somehow appeared to be out of position. He flopped there and let through Isak for the leveler. The second half was less productive and only had his blocking Isak header on a counter, which was a pretty mixed showing.
Midfielders:
.Romeo Lavia: (3.9/5) Lavia made a few wayward passes to get the game rolling, but he soon fell into rhythm. He laid up a vital role of setting up the Palmer goal by keeping at bay the defenders of Newcastle.
.Moises Caicedo: (4.5/5) Moises Caicedo was brilliant in the defensive role when he snuffed out the fires and spread the game well. His quick thinking prevented Newcastle from getting any unchallenged scoring chance in the second half.
.Cole Palmer: (4.7/5) Palmer was the star. Having played a testing game against Liverpool, he was ready to prove his point. He did have an early shot scuffed and ruled offside, but was not going to be put off by that. Beautiful pass created by him, helped Pedro Neto get the assist, while Jackson scored. Then, two minutes into the second half, Palmer used a strong hit past Nick Pope to cement the winning opportunity for Chelsea.
Attackers:
.Noni Madueke: (3.7/5) Noni Madueke tried to influence the game up front, but not with much luck in the last third of the pitch as his shots lacked power. He was substituted in the second half.
.Nicolas Jackson: (4.4/5) Nicolas Jackson himself was a handful for the Newcastle defense, he tried to stretch them with pace and power, and finally, scored the opening goal, tapping in Neto’s cross.
.Pedro Neto: (4.3/5) Pedro Neto was the spark for Chelsea on the left wing. His speed carried him behind Newcastle’s defense, and he assisted Jackson with a beautiful pass to get that goal. He then headed it on the post later on.
Conclusion
Chelsea won 2-1, but it was Cole Palmer showing the world he has it and is ready for the larger roles. Critics had spoken, but he proved that indeed he was the real thing. The Blues had given up a lot since Liverpool took the upper hand away from them. With today’s win, Chelsea can now return to its victorious ways in the Premier League. Enzo Maresca and his team now look forward to carrying these wins into the remaining fixtures.
