Chelsea have rekindled their pursuit of AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan following the breakdown of contract negotiations in Italy. The Blues are taking a shot at the goalkeeper as they know that his contract is expiring and that he has not yet determined his future.
Chelsea Monitoring the Contract Stalemate
Last summer, Milan turned down two of Chelsea’s offers. The Blues thought that their valuation was reasonable considering that Maignan’s contract would expire in 2026. Milan on the other hand disagreed and at that time refused to negotiate further. The matter is quite different now. Maignan still hasn’t committed to a new deal and a few major clubs are closely monitoring the situation.
Chelsea need to decide if they want to intervene in January or if they prefer to wait until next summer when he will be available for free. One of the goalkeepers has to be sacrificed first. Filip Jorgensen is the one who will most probably be leaving to get more playing time.
Milan Eye Replacements as Market Heats Up
First of all, Milan have begun to look at different possibilities. According to them, Cagliari’s Elia Caprile is the one. However, Inter are also admiring him. Maignan, as always, is at a very high level. Milan’s position near the top of Serie A was kept by a great save from Maignan during the derby win over Inter.
Chelsea are also very good in goal. Without a doubt, Robert Sanchez will be a big reason of this season. The 2025 Club World Cup honored him with the best goalkeeper award. Additionally, he together with one other goalkeeper, is in the second position in the Premier League clean sheets ranking this season.
Author Opinion
Chelsea’s revival of the interest in Maignan is logical. Maignan offers a world-class aura and the mental toughness in big matches. On the other hand, the progression of Sanchez poses a very important question. Getting a reinforcement is a wise move, but the disruption should be kept at a minimum.
